Chapter 5

The knife trembled in Johnathon's hand. His breath came too fast. The clock above the room ticked down. He set the knife on the board and stopped. He closed his eyes and pulled one slow breath through his nose. Then another. His pulse slowed. He opened his eyes and found the crowd. Lexi stood at the front of the audience rail. She had made it back from the doors. She caught his look and gave him a small nod. Since ninth grade she had shown up for him. She brought soup when his mother was in the hospital. She learned the route across the city when her phone died. Now she stood there, calm, and let her nod do the talking. It steadied him more than any words. Johnathon picked the knife back up. He thought of the kitten he'd left curled in his apartment. He thought of Lexi at the rail. He thought of his own hands, the same hands that drew and cooked, and he let both feed the plate. He unfolded the charcoal sketch and smoothed it flat. Then he began. He worked fast and clean. He sliced the vegetables into thin curved strips. He built a fan across the plate, the way the sketch showed. He dragged the sauce from his jar in a slow arc, a brushstroke made of food. He set the seared fish at the center. He placed each herb like a mark on paper. His hands did not shake now. They moved. The clock hit zero. "Hands up," a judge called. Johnathon stepped back and raised his hands. The plate sat finished. It looked like his drawing come to life. Three judges circled his station. One leaned close and studied the sauce line. One tasted the fish and did not speak. The third looked from the plate to the sketch and back. "You drew this first," the judge said. It was not a question. "Yes," Johnathon said. The judge wrote something on the card. "It reads like art," the judge said. "And it tastes like food that means it." Then the three moved on to the next station. Johnathon breathed. Across the room the scores went up on a board. His number climbed near the top. Not first. Third. But third meant he moved on to the next round of the qualifier. He found Lexi at the rail. She was already looking at him. She did not cheer or wave. She just smiled, wide and plain, the way she smiled when she meant it. He crossed to her, still holding his empty sauce jar. "I stayed focused," he said. "You helped me do that." "I know," Lexi said. Her voice dropped soft. "I'm proud of you." She stopped there. "That's all I'm saying right now." A runner tapped his shoulder. "Round two draws in an hour," she said. "New ingredient. Blind box. Be ready." Johnathon's stomach tightened again. He had made it through. Now the real test was coming.
