Chapter 10

The blessing sat in Kensei's chest like a stone he couldn't set down. His father could not lift him. So Kensei would build a life the king never touched. It began with one small thing he had wanted for months. He turned to Jeon-min in the apartment doorway. "Walk with me to the market," he said. "Today. Now." Jeon-min looked up from his bag. He was folding the sketch of his family's knot pattern, the one his great-grandmother invented and never taught anyone. He put it away and studied Kensei's face. "You've said that four times," he said. "You've never left the stairs." He said it flat, no push, just the number. They walked. Kensei held Jeon-min's hand until the market hall came into view. Then his fingers went cold. The stall stood packed with hanging beef and crates of fruit. People moved everywhere, close, looking. A small gecko with cat ears sat on a fruit crate, still, watching him. Kensei let go of Jeon-min's hand. He pressed his own hand flat against his leg. "I can't," he whispered. "In the apartment I can hold you. Out here they'll see. They'll know." "Know what," Jeon-min said. He did not lower his voice. A woman buying peaches glanced over. "That I love you. Let them." He picked a pear from a crate and paid the vendor. "I've shown my grandmother's pattern in four cities to strangers. I don't hide the thing I'm most afraid to lose." He held the pear out. "You're the thing I'm most afraid to lose. And I'm not hiding you." Kensei looked at the crowd. No enforcers. No master. No decree. The law was struck. Nobody here could sign him down; he was already as low as he could go, and free. The fear was old, from a life that no longer ran his. He had spent that whole life learning to love behind a working door. He took the pear. Then he took Jeon-min's hand, in front of the vendor, in front of the woman with the peaches. His hand shook. He did not let go. "You're ridiculous," Jeon-min said. But he squeezed back. "Okay," Kensei said. His voice held. They walked into the hall together, past the beef and the crates, hands joined. A few people looked. Kensei met their eyes and kept walking. Nobody stopped them. Nobody could. They ate at a bench inside the hall, sharing the pear, out where the whole city could see. Kensei had done the one small thing. He was no longer afraid to love Jeon-min in the open. But sitting there, Kensei saw the truth of it plain. He could hold Jeon-min's hand in a market now. That was not a life. He had no name, no trade, no place among these people who bought and sold and built. Jeon-min had his family's pattern to save. Kensei had nothing to his own name at all. If he wanted to marry, he needed something to offer besides a demoted man's empty hands.
