Chapter 17

A week after the ceremony, they walked to the market together. Kensei had wanted this for so long. Bread they did not cook. A street that was not the apartment. Jeon-min held his hand without asking. The rings sat on both their fingers. Kensei kept his shoulders loose. He told himself no one here knew them, and no one here could take anything. They stopped at a fruit stall. Jeon-min bumped Kensei's arm and pointed at a bruised peach. "That one's soft. Half price if you argue." Kensei laughed. Without thinking, he leaned in and kissed him, quick, on the mouth. It was nothing he had planned. His body just did it. A man across the lane went still. He held a basket against his hip and watched. He did not look away. Kensei's stomach dropped. The old fear came back fast. He remembered the neighbor in the hallway, the night he watched Jeon-min sleep and left instead of staying. He felt his hand start to pull from Jeon-min's grip. The man kept staring. He shifted the basket. He opened his mouth. Kensei braced for the word he had heard his whole life, the one that came before the report, the demotion, the enforcers at the door. Jeon-min did not let go. He tightened his fingers around Kensei's and stared straight back at the man. "He's my husband," Jeon-min said. Flat. No shake in it. "We're married. You can look all you want." Kensei stopped breathing. He waited for the man to spit, to shout, to fetch someone. This was the fifth city. The law here was struck. There was no decree left to break. He knew that. His body had not learned it yet. The man looked at their hands. He looked at the rings. Then he shrugged and lifted his basket. "Then buy her a peach too," he said, nodding at the stall woman, and he walked off into the crowd. That was all. No shout. No report. Kensei stood in the lane and felt the fear drain out of him like water from a cracked cup. His hand was still in Jeon-min's. He had not pulled it free after all. He had wanted to. He had not done it. "You almost let go," Jeon-min said. Not angry. Just a fact. "I know," Kensei said. "I didn't." "No," Jeon-min agreed. "You didn't." Kensei bought the bruised peach. He did not argue the price. They ate it walking, passing it back and forth, juice on both their hands. He kissed Jeon-min again in the open, slower this time, because he wanted to and because no one could stop him. The fear had lost its teeth. The open life he promised was real now, in his mouth, in the sun, in a stranger's shrug. But a promise was easy. A whole life was longer. They had a market, a husband each, and a trade to build with hands that still shook a little. Now the work of filling the days began.
