Chapter 40

They reached the fifth city on a gray afternoon. The house smelled of dust and cold thread. Kensei set the kamayaki book on the table. He opened it to the blessing page, then to the pages he had filled on the slope. The words sat there in a language neither of them could read. The gray-haired woman had spoken it once. She was far behind them now, past the border, on her slope. If they wanted the blessing for Ha-ni, they had to carry the language home in their own heads. "We learn it," Jeon-min said. He did not look up from his needle. "Both of us. The whole thing." "That's a month of work. More." "Then a month." He set the needle down. "I will not hand her a book she can't read. I will not." So they began. Kensei wrote out every kamayak word he had recorded, matched to the woman's meaning beside it. Jeon-min drilled him at the table while Ha-ni napped. At night they traded the list back and forth. Jeon-min learned by pattern, the way he learned dye and knots. Kensei learned by saying each word aloud until his mouth stopped tripping. They marked the ones they missed and hit those twice. Some nights the work stalled. A whole page held words with no clear meaning, only the woman's guesses. Kensei wanted to skip them. Jeon-min made him sit. "Skip one, the sentence breaks," he said. "Then the blessing lies." They stayed with the hard page three nights until it cracked open. Ha-ni learned faster than either of them. She grabbed the list off the table. She pointed at a word and made the sound back. "Warm," she said, in the old tongue, the word the woman had given for warmth. She did not know what she said. She only knew the shape of it. Kensei stopped. He looked at his daughter holding the dead language in her small mouth. "Say it again," he said. She said it again. By the end of the month they could read the whole book. Not smoothly. But every word. Kensei took a clean sheet and wrote the blessing out in their own language, line by line, the two of them checking each phrase against the old text. The sanctified union of two men. The body named warm, not shame. The want taught as a holy skill. It was theirs now. No woman on a slope stood between Ha-ni and her own history. Jeon-min read the finished page once, then set it flat. "Now she has it," he said. "In words she'll grow up speaking." Kensei looked at the translation. Then he looked at the door. The blessing was written plain now, in the language of the country that had burned it. Anyone who read it would know exactly what his family was. He had made the proof and left it on his own table.
