Chapter 43

The man's warning stayed in Kensei's ears for a week. He waited for enforcers. He waited for a decree nailed to their door. None came. The stores stayed open. The jackets sold. The blessing pages left the counters faster than the clerks could copy them. On the eighth morning, Kensei stopped waiting for punishment and went to the market with Jeon-min. They walked to the great market hall together. Kensei held Jeon-min's hand. No one turned. A vendor sold beef and hung fruit from hooks. Jeon-min stopped at a stall and picked out plums, counting coin without hurry. A cat with orange and gold markings sat on a barrel and watched them. Ha-ni reached for it from Kensei's arms. The cat let her touch its fur. "People know us here now," Jeon-min said. "The jacket man. The book man." He put a plum in his bag. "No one has thrown a stone." Kensei bought bread. They ate it under a cherry tree past the hall, its blossoms pink and thick overhead. This was the thing he had wanted for years. To eat somewhere that was not four walls. To sit beside Jeon-min in the open sun with their daughter between them. He had it now. Nothing stopped him. They did not go back to their rented room that night. Jeon-min had found a house at the edge of the fifth city, painted green and blue, with two front windows and a low roof. He had paid for it with the store coin and told no one. He led Kensei to the door and set the key in his hand. "Ours," Jeon-min said. "Room for Ha-ni. Room for us. Room for the work." Inside, they put Ha-ni to sleep in the small room. Then they were alone. Kensei kissed Jeon-min against the wall of their own house, and Jeon-min kissed him back with the lamp still lit. Jeon-min's sash came loose. The red and blue garment he had sewn fell to the floor. Clothes lay where they dropped them. No one watched. No one would. After, they lay tangled on the bare bed frame. Jeon-min's mouth had left a red mark on Kensei's shoulder. Kensei traced the knot pattern stitched into the fallen garment. "We won," Kensei said. "The stores. The house. This. All of it open." Jeon-min sat up. He looked at his bag by the door, where the family sketch and the map of craftspeople stayed. "The blessing is in five cities," he said. "You made it free for anyone. That means the ones who hate it have it too. In writing. With our shop stamp on every page." He looked at Kensei. "They know exactly which door to find us behind now." Kensei looked at the green and blue walls he had just called home. The house was theirs. The stamp on the blessing pointed straight to it.
