Chapter 8

The judges sat still after the master spoke. The king said nothing. Kensei stood in the grand hall with the scroll on the long table between them. He had proven the demotion was a lie. But proving the lie did not change the law. Even now, he was Hikui. Even now, he could not marry Jeon-min. The old law only condemned the master. It did not undo the rule that kept them apart. Kensei looked at his father. The king had let him walk here. The king had told him when the judges sat. Now the king had a choice, and only the king could make it. "You broke your own law when you signed me down," Kensei said. "The judges see that. But the law that forbids our marriage is still yours to keep or break." Jeon-min stepped close. He wore the dark hanbok he loved, gold thread at the collar. He did not speak. He only put his hand on the table beside the scroll, near Kensei's hand. The judges watched the two hands. The king's face was gray. He knew what the scroll cost him. If he denied everything, the master would name him again, and the judges would strip his crest. If he confessed, he lost the pride of the throne. He had one way to keep both his seat and his name. "Rewrite it," Kensei said. "You made the decree that demotes any Hikari who loves a Hikui. Unmake it. Let Hikari and Hikui marry. Then you are not a king who broke his law. You are a king who fixed it." The hall was silent. The judges turned to the king. He was cornered by his own hand on the scroll. The king lifted his chin. He spoke to the judges, not to his son. "The old decree was unjust," he said. "I strike it. Hikari and Hikui may wed by law." The head judge dipped his brush and wrote the words into the record. The master exhaled. Jeon-min's hand closed over Kensei's on the table. The king turned and left the hall without looking at Kensei again. His guards followed. The gold doors shut behind them. Kensei stood there, holding Jeon-min's hand in the open, in front of the judges, in front of everyone. No one told them to stop. The law was gone. "We can marry now," Kensei said quietly. Jeon-min laughed, short and shaky. "You're still Hikui, you know. You threw your blood away for nothing." "Not nothing," Kensei said. But the king had struck the law and left. He had signed no pardon returning Kensei's rank. Kensei was free to marry. He was still a servant with no name and no family. To build a real life, he needed his own standing back, and his father had walked out the door.
