Chapter 19

The grove hid seven animals now, safe behind Shelly's spell. But at dawn a knock came at Pawswell House. The watching townswoman stood in the yard, arms crossed. Behind her waited two neighbors. "Three animals gone from your pens overnight," she said. "Healed and sent off, you claim. Prove it." Lilith opened her mouth. She had no papers for the vanished animals. No trusted vet had signed for them. Her supplies had run dry, and she could not even offer the woman tea to slow her down. The empty pens spoke louder than any word. "Show me where they went," the woman said. "Or I tell the town you're drowning strays in the river." Rosalind stepped out behind Lilith, ink on her fingers, a chart pressed to her chest. "I signed these releases myself," the older healer said. She would not lie about magic, but rehoming was no lie. "Three sound animals. Walked out on their own legs." The woman did not soften. "Charts. I want to see them alive." Lilith knew she could not lead them to the grove. If they walked the field, the empty land would betray her the moment Shelly stepped away. She turned the dark ring on her finger. It had sat there since her mother's death, heavy, always cold. Words came easier when she wore it. "Come to the field's edge," she said. "See for yourself." The walk was short. At the field, the townswoman stopped and stared. The ground itself rose into wool. Sheep lifted their heads from the grass where they had seemed only grass. Two bushes uncurled into tigers. Three trees straightened into lions, manes shaking loose. The largest lion looked down at the shaking woman. "The strays you seek live safe," the lion said. His voice rolled like a low bell. "We take the ones no town wants. She heals them. We give them a home." The neighbors dropped to their knees. The townswoman's crossed arms fell to her sides. Lilith touched the ring and spoke plain. "I heal them, then I place them where they'll be safe. Sometimes that place is here. No river. No cruelty. You have my word." The certainty in her voice left no crack to argue. The woman looked from the lions to Lilith for a long moment. "Then it's true," she whispered. "You keep them." She wiped her face. "I'll tell the town the animals are cared for. Not drowned." She turned and walked back, quieter than she came. The grove was safe. Lilith had bought her word, and her freedom to keep placing strays. But the lions had shown their true shape to three townspeople. The secret Shelly's spells guarded was no longer only Lilith's to hold. Now it lived in the mouths of people she could not control.
