Chapter 15
The sealed book held its saved memories, and Lilith believed she had found her footing. Then she opened her spell to check its edges, as she did each morning. The yellow center still glowed. The teal rim still held. But a thread had turned inward. It reached, slow and hungry, toward a memory she had never written down: the day she married Tre. She saw it start to pull. The song she needed to restore her children lived on true feeling. If the spell took her wedding, she would have nothing real left to sing with.
She grabbed her pen. But the memory was hers, unrecorded, and the thread was already inside it. She could not write fast enough. She had proven that.
"Mnemora," she said, loud in the stone room. The goddess of memory came through the doorway, small and pale, gold stitching on her white gown. She had sealed Lilith's records before. She kept what mattered.
Mnemora looked at the reaching thread. "It wants the wedding," she said.
"If it takes that, I lose the feeling. Without the feeling I can't sing them back." Lilith's hands shook over the blank page. "I can't write it in time."
"Then don't write it." Mnemora stepped closer. "Say it. Out loud. Now."
Another voice spoke from the shadow by the wall. Nyx Shadowveil, the goddess of night, who had guided Lilith's hand at every hard cost. She spoke the worst things without softening them. "The dragon takes what's silent," Nyx said. "Speak it and she can catch it."
Lilith understood. A memory in the mind was the spell's to steal. A memory spoken to Mnemora, sealed, was hers to keep. She opened her mouth and started to talk.
She told them the water was warm that day. Tre wore no shoes in the sand. She had traded her tail for legs to stand beside him, and her legs still trembled. When he took her hands, she stopped shaking. She sang the first note of her own vow, and every gull on the shore went quiet to hear it. She told them how her chest felt full, like a tide that would not go out.
As she spoke, Mnemora pressed both hands to the air where the memory hung. Gold light gathered around Lilith's words. The reaching thread strained. Then it slid off the sealed light and drew back, empty.
Lilith kept talking until the whole day was out of her and safe. When she finished, the feeling was still there. Warm. Whole. Hers.
"It holds," Mnemora said.
But the thread did not vanish. It hung in the spell, quivering, denied. Nyx watched it with flat eyes. "You beat it this time," she said. "It will not stop. It wants the deepest one now. Next it reaches for the births of your children."
Lilith looked at the thread, still hungry, still turned inward. Her wedding was safe. Her song was safe. And the spell had already chosen where it would strike next.
