Chapter 16

The thread had chosen its next meal. Nyx had named it: the births of Lilith's children. Lilith did not wait for morning. She gathered Novalee, Hadley in her arms, and Gabe, who came slow and watchful, and she carried them to the tall stone hall where Mnemora kept the sealed records. Only a memory spoken to the goddess stayed safe. Lilith meant to say all three births out loud before the thread could reach them. Mnemora met them at the door. Gold thread glinted on her white gown. She spoke plain, as always. "Which one is closest?" Lilith opened her spell and looked. The thread pointed at the deepest birth. "Gabe," she said. "His first." Gabe stood by the window. He watched her the way he always did now, like a stranger had walked into his house. He did not know she was his mother anymore. That knowing was gone from him. Lilith felt the old ache and set it aside. She had no time for it. She began to speak. She told the room how the night went long. How the first cry came thin, then loud. How she held a boy against her chest and named him Gabe. Mnemora pressed her hands to the air. Gold light gathered around the words. The thread strained toward the memory and slid off the sealed light. Lilith moved to the next. She spoke Novalee's birth, the small fists, the black hair already thick. Gold caught it. Sealed. She spoke Hadley's, the newest, only three months back. The baby stirred in her arms as if she felt her own beginning told aloud. Three births out. Three sealed. The thread pulled back, empty. "It holds," Mnemora said. But Gabe had gone still. He stared at Lilith with a face she did not know. "You said my name like it belongs to you," he said. "It doesn't." Lilith's throat closed. The births were safe in the seal. But the thread had done its slow work while she talked. It had not taken the birth. It had taken the last thing she still shared with Gabe. His memory of trusting her voice. "Gabe," she said. He stepped back. "Don't." Novalee reached for his sleeve. He shook her off, not cruel, just certain. He did not know his sister either now. Lilith saw it happen in his eyes, one thread pulling the trust out of him while she saved the older stories. Mnemora watched, quiet. "The seal keeps what you speak," she said. "It cannot keep what it already reached." Lilith held Hadley and looked at her oldest son, who now saw all of them as strangers. The births were safe. She could read them back one day. But the reading needed him to believe her first. And he no longer would. She had beaten the thread and lost the one door left to reach him.
