Chapter 17

Gabe would not stay in a room with Lilith. Since the thread took his trust, he fled whenever she came near. The sealed book could give back his memories, but only if she read it aloud to him. She could not read to a boy who ran. So Lilith stopped chasing. She thought instead about where a boy could not run. She remembered the chapel in the sea cave, past the tideline where the water sealed the door twice a day. One way in. One way out, and only when the tide went low. If Gabe stood inside when the water rose, he could not leave until she finished. She needed him to walk in willingly. So she carried the crystal keepsake, the one he had loved as a small boy. It caught the cave light and threw blue across the wet stone. Gabe followed it the way he once followed her voice. He did not know why the crystal pulled at him. He only came. The tide climbed and shut the door. Gabe turned and saw the water fill the mouth of the cave. His face changed. "You trapped me," he said. He backed to the wall. "I did," Lilith said. "I will not hurt you. I only want to read." He would still bolt for the water and hurt himself trying. So she had brought help. From the dark pool at the chapel's edge rose Marina Tidecaller, the sea spirit who kept the old promise between the ocean and the shore. She stepped onto the stone, blue hair dripping, and looked at the frightened boy with plain eyes. "He is bound to your line," Marina said to Lilith. "The sea still feels that. I can hold him still. Read fast." Marina laid her small hands on Gabe's shoulders. Water wound up from the pool and pressed him gently to the wall. He strained and could not move. "Let me go," he said. Lilith opened the sealed book. Gold light lay on the words Mnemora had locked away. She read his birth aloud, the long night, the thin first cry, the boy she named against her chest. Her voice found the tune under the words, siren and mermaid singing while her goddess held the thread. Gabe stopped fighting. His eyes went wide. "I remember the cold water," he said slowly. "I remember learning to float. You held my chin." He looked at her. Not with love yet. But he knew her face now. "Mom?" The tide fell. The door opened. Marina let him go. Gabe did not run. He stood staring at the crystal in Lilith's hand, one thread of trust back in him. Then the book grew warm. A new line rose on the page in the sealed gold, words Lilith had never written. It was Novalee's name, and beneath it, the memory of her own mother's face, already fading from the girl at home.
