Chapter 23

The cold pull sat behind Lilith's eyes. The thread had turned on her own page. She had sealed Tre's song, but no one could read her memories back to her. Selene had lost her name this way. Gabe could not restore his mother. If the thread cut deep, the loss would stand. She had to seal her memories alone, before it bit. "You've sealed the others," Mnemora said. "Now seal yourself. Speak a memory back to me. I hold the gold. You hold the word." Marina Tidecaller crossed the temple floor, water beading on her arms. "The thread hunts what you love most," she said. "Give it nothing to reach." Lilith closed her eyes. She reached for the memory the thread would want. Her children on the shore. Gabe at the water's edge, small, before he learned to fear her. Novalee drawing in wet sand. Hadley in Tre's arms, loud. She began to speak. The pull sharpened. The thread had found the same memory. She felt it tug the edges, fraying Gabe's small face. Marina raised her hands. Water rose from the temple's shell-carved basins and wrapped Lilith's shoulders, steady as a held breath. "Say it faster," Marina said. "I'll hold you still. Same as I held the boy." Lilith spoke faster. She named the shore, the sand, each child in turn. The thread pulled harder, trying to strip the words before they left her mouth. Her voice shook. The water at her shoulders did not. She kept the picture whole and pushed every word out into the hall. Mnemora lifted her palm. Gold light gathered above it, then dropped over the memory like a net closing. The pull stopped. The cold behind Lilith's eyes went quiet. The memory held, whole, her children on the shore, sealed beyond the thread's reach. Lilith opened her eyes. The water slid from her shoulders back into the basins. She was breathing hard. She had done what no one could do for her. She had sealed her own memory alone. "It held," Mnemora said. "You learned it in time." But Mnemora did not lower her hand all the way. She looked at the space above Lilith's page, where the gold light still hung. "One memory is safe," she said. "You have a life of them. The thread will keep hunting until every one is sealed or gone. And I cannot stay at your side for each." Lilith understood. She could seal herself now. That was the win. But she could not seal a whole life in one night, and the thread would not rest. Marina spoke from the door, plain. "The sea is going quiet. My covenant breaks. Soon I won't come when you call." She looked at Lilith. "Seal what matters most first. You may not get a second turn." Lilith looked at her own page in Mnemora's light. She knew now which memory she had to save next, and she had no help to lose.
