Chapter 24

Marina left the temple first. Lilith followed the sound of the sea to the cave chapel, where the tide climbed the weathered stone. Marina stood knee-deep in the water, and the water no longer answered her. It pulled at her arms and slid off. "The covenant is nearly gone," she said. "When it breaks, I can't hold you. The thread will take you while your hands shake." She looked at Lilith. "You need something else to steady you. Something that won't fail." The cold woke behind Lilith's eyes. The thread had found her again. It reached for the memory under her ribs, the wedding song, the deepest well she used to reach her children. Her knees bent. The water at her legs did not hold. Marina reached, but her grip broke like foam. "It's going," Marina said. "I'm sorry. It's going now." Lilith pressed her palm to the stone floor. She could not lean on the sea. She had to make her own anchor. She sang low, the note her goddess side used to hold the thread taut. She was not sealing a memory. She was calling. Water churned at the chapel mouth. A shape rose from it, small and bright, her enchanted seahorse, its runes glowing teal. Behind it came a larger light. The unicorn stepped through the tide, hooves silent on the wet stone. Lilith had once stolen a memory from this creature for the dragon. It had every reason to flee her. It did not. It lowered its horn and touched her shoulder. "Anchor me," Lilith said. Her voice cracked on the thread's pull. The unicorn's horn pressed steady against her, warm and unmoving, a still point the sea could not offer. The seahorse curled at her throat, its runes feeding her song. She was held now, not by borrowed water, but by magic that chose to stay. Lilith spoke the wedding memory aloud. The night, the tide, Tre's voice singing to her at the shore. The thread yanked. It tried to strip the words from her mouth. The unicorn did not shift. The horn held her spine straight. She pushed each word out whole, the melody, the salt air, the ring. The thread bit hard, then slipped. She named the last note of the song. Gold light rose from her own hands, the sealing she had learned to do alone. It dropped over the memory and closed. The cold behind her eyes went quiet. The wedding song held, sealed, beyond the thread's reach. Marina sank back as the last water left her. "It's done," she said. "My call is gone. But you found another." She faded into the retreating tide. Lilith rested her hand on the unicorn's neck. She had lost the sea's steadying, but she had gained an anchor that would not break. Her deepest memory was safe. And she finally had a partner to hold her through every one still hunted.
