Chapter 32

The spell was closed now, sealed and paid for. The wolf lay still where it had fallen, no longer holding anything open. Lilith carried it home to the temple, up the wide stone steps between the carved waves. She laid it in the courtyard where her children could see. They had trusted her at last. Now she had to tell them the trust had cost a life. Gabe reached the wolf first. He crouched and studied it the way he studied everything, slow and quiet, before he touched the cold fur. Novalee stood back with Hadley on her hip. Marina had come from the shore to help bury the body, and she waited by the columns, blue hair still damp. "What is it?" Novalee asked. Lilith knelt beside Gabe. She had no soft way to say it. "The spell needed one last price. This creature held it open. To finish, I let it go. It's dead because of the magic I made." Gabe pulled his hand back. "You killed it." "I did." Novalee's face went hard. "So the spell that keeps us needed something dead." She set Hadley down on the stone. "You said the price was paid." "I thought it was. This was the last of it." "You always say that." Novalee's voice stayed flat. She did not cry. That was worse. "Every time it's the last." Lilith felt the fragile trust bending. One clumsy word and it would snap. She looked at the dead wolf, then at her daughter, and chose to stop hiding. "You're right," Lilith said. "I kept telling you it was over when it wasn't. I was afraid you'd hate me if you saw the whole cost. This is the whole cost. A creature died so you'll never leave me. I won't pretend it was clean." The courtyard went quiet. Hadley crawled to the wolf and put her small hand on its side. Glass rattled somewhere in the temple, then held. "It didn't want to die," Hadley said. Plain, sure. "It wanted to stop." Marina stepped forward. "She's right. I felt it in the water. The creature was empty long before tonight. Your mother didn't take a life. She let one rest." She looked at Lilith. "But rest still has a weight. Carry it honestly." Gabe stood. He was watching Lilith now, not the wolf. "You could've lied," he said. "You didn't." "No more lying," Lilith said. "Not to you. Not ever." Novalee crossed the stone and stood beside the body. She did not take Lilith's hand. But she did not walk away either. "We bury it," she said. "Together." They dug in the soft ground behind the columns while the sea whispered below. The trust held, cracked but whole. Lilith had told them the worst, and they had stayed. The spell was finished. What she had not counted was what came next: a daughter who now saw exactly what her mother would trade for love, and had begun to wonder what she herself might be worth.
