Chapter 33

The wolf was buried. The spell was sealed. Lilith should have felt done. Instead one face kept surfacing when she closed her eyes: Selene, alone in the drowned library, who had taught her everything and asked for nothing back. Selene had traded her own name to the dragon. She had warned Lilith against the worst prices. And Lilith had walked out with her eternity while Selene stayed behind, fading. That debt sat heavier than the grave. Lilith left her children with Tre and swam down. The library rose from the dark, its broken windows green with age, its lower doors swallowed by water. She passed the drowned shelves and found Selene where she always was, seated among the ruined books. Selene had grown fainter. Her edges blurred like breath on glass. Her white hair drifted. She did not turn her head. "You came back," Selene said. "You have what you wanted." "I do," Lilith said. "You gave it to me. I never paid you." "There's no price for teaching." "There's a debt." Lilith knelt in the flooded stone. "You're fading because no one says your name. I can hold it. My song carries intention. If I sing your name, and mean it, the fading stops." Selene looked at her then. "The name doesn't feel like mine anymore." "Then let me make it feel true again." Selene was quiet a long moment. "Once you start, you don't stop. Every night. Forever. You have a family." "I have forever too," Lilith said. "I can spare a name inside it." She called the enchanted seahorse close. It circled Selene, its runes glowing soft against the dark water, holding her steady the way it had once held Lilith. Then Lilith began to sing. Her goddess side held the thread. Her mermaid and siren voices carried the word into the water. Not a spell to bind. A spell to keep. "Selene Lumaris," she sang. "Selene Lumaris." The blurred edges sharpened. The dim light in Selene's skin steadied and grew. Her hands stopped drifting. She pressed one to her own chest as if checking it was still there. "It's mine," Selene whispered. "It feels like mine." "Every night," Lilith promised. "I won't forget you." Selene met her eyes. For the first time she looked less like a woman erasing and more like one staying. "There's a god who wants me gone," she said. "He remembers me only to hate me. If I stop fading, he'll notice. He'll come." Lilith stood. The water pressed cold against her. She had paid her debt. But the payment had woken something. Selene would live now, and being seen meant being hunted. "Then he'll answer to me," Lilith said. She left the library lit, faintly, from within. Behind her, Selene said her own name once, and it held. Ahead, somewhere above the waves, a god of day had just felt an old enemy come back into the world.
