Chapter 38

Three nights later, the scribe came back. Lilith stood on the temple steps when she saw the small figure climbing from the shore. She knew the walk. Wren Lask, ink-stained and blunt, the girl who had traded her godsfire to the sea to spare Lilith's children. Lilith had hidden the light, but she had given away a secret in return: the way to her door. Now the girl stood at the foot of the gilded stairs, staring up at the shell-carved columns and the great temple where Lilith's family slept. "You found it," Lilith said. It was not a question. "You said come here to call it back." Wren touched the bare place at her throat. "I came." Lilith came down the steps. The trident hummed in her hand. "You want the fire now." "No." Wren looked past her at the temple. "I want to know who else can follow me here." The words landed hard. Lilith had thought only of the god's eyes. She had not thought that the sea itself could be read. A hidden light was still a light. Someone who hunted godsfire could trace its path down into the water and up this shore. The cottage. The temple. Her children. "The seahorse hid it deep," Lilith said. "Deep isn't gone." Wren's jaw set. "Anyone who wants that fire will search the water. The sea drops it near you. They'll surface where I surfaced." Lilith saw it then, the flaw in her own plan. She had traded a beacon in the sky for a trail in the sea. The danger had not left. It had only sunk. She raised her hand and sang one low note. The water beyond the surf turned. Her enchanted seahorse rose, the gold vial still curled beneath its fin. The light glowed faint through the glass. "Then it can't stay near here," Lilith said. "Take it back. Carry it yourself, far from this shore. When you spend it, spend it where no path leads to my children." Wren stared at the vial. "You're giving it to me. No terms." "One. Never come to this water again." Lilith held the girl's eyes. "You keep your fire. I keep my door hidden. That's the trade." The seahorse swam close and lifted the vial. Wren reached out. Her hand did not shake this time. She lifted the glass over her head and hooked it at her throat. The gold light burned steady against her chest. "He'll see it now," Lilith said. "Then he sees me." Wren turned toward the shore. "Not you." She climbed the sand and was gone. The seahorse sank into the dark. Lilith stood alone on the temple steps. The fire was off her shore for good, and the trail that led here was broken. But the girl carried a beacon into the world now, and she still meant to spend it. Whatever Wren burned it for, it would burn far from this door.
