Chapter 39

Wren was gone three days when Lilith found the debt still hanging over her. The scribe had carried the godsfire away and broken the trail to the temple. She had asked for nothing. That silence sat wrong with Lilith. A gift given without price was a price waiting to be named. When the girl came back to collect, Lilith would have nothing to hand her. She stood on the temple steps and looked at the sea, sure the scribe would return. She did. Lilith saw the small figure climb from the surf on the fourth morning. The vial burned gold at Wren's throat. Her ink-stained hands hung empty at her sides. She stopped at the foot of the gilded stairs and looked up, the same blunt stare as before. "You came back to this water," Lilith said. "We agreed you wouldn't." "I know what I agreed." Wren touched the vial. "I came to settle it. You carried my fire off your shore. You kept me alive doing it. I don't take that for free." Lilith spread her hands. "I have nothing to give you. My magic costs the people I love. I won't spend them on a debt." "I don't want your magic." Wren pulled the scorched satchel around. She dug out a folded page and held it up. "I want you to say I can read your record. The true one. The reason you bound them. I wrote it. I want to keep the copy." Lilith went still. The page was the one Wren had written at the temple, sealed so it would never fade. Her confession. The one thing she had made plain and honest. "You'd carry that too," Lilith said. "With the fire." "If a god burns me down, someone should know why you did it." Wren's jaw set. "Not the god's version. Yours." Lilith understood then. The girl did not want payment. She wanted permission. To be the keeper of the one true page while she drew the danger away. Lilith sang a single low note. The gold light in the folded page brightened under Wren's hand, answering her voice. She let the note fall. "It's yours," Lilith said. "Carry it. When you spend the fire, spend the truth with it." Wren tucked the page against her chest, beside the vial. Two lights now, one gold and one written. She turned toward the shore without thanks. That was her way. "The debt's clear," she said, and climbed the sand. Lilith watched her go. The scribe carried her fire and her confession into the world together, both far from this door. The debt was paid. But the truest account of why she had bound her family no longer lived only in her keep. It moved now, on the neck of a girl who meant to burn.
