Chapter 40

Wren was three days gone when Lilith saw the fish. She stood on the shore below the cottage and watched the water where the seahorse had once hidden the vial. Wren had carried the fire off and broken the trail. But the trail had not fully closed. A pale creature circled the empty spot, slow and steady, nosing the sand where the light had been. It came back each morning. Something still smelled the godsfire here. Lilith walked into the surf. The creature did not flee. It turned its blunt head toward her, then dropped again to the sand and pushed its snout into the water. It was tasting. Whatever hunter Apollo had sent, it had left this thing to sniff out the source. If it kept circling, it would draw the hunter straight to her children. She could not sing it away. A song this close to the cottage would ring through the water and mark the spot louder than the fish did. She needed the trail buried, not scattered. Marina came when Lilith called her name into the deep trench. The sea spirit rose from the water, flowers still in her pale hair, though her covenant had broken long ago. Only the deep still answered her now. "You called," Marina said. "Most of the sea won't hear me. Say it fast." "A creature circles where the fire was hidden." Lilith pointed. "It's tracking. I can't sing it off without waking the whole shore." Marina looked at the pale fish. "It smells salt and old fire. It won't stop." She stepped deeper. "I can move the water. Pull the smell down to the trench and cap it. The fish follows the smell. It will follow it away." "You'll strain what's left of you." "Then it strains." Marina lifted both hands. The water around the empty spot began to turn, slow at first, then tighter. She drew the current inward like thread onto a spindle. The pale creature jerked, snout still down, and swung to follow the pull. Lilith stood in the shallows and held still. She did not sing. The one thing she wanted to do, she left undone. Marina walked backward into the deep, both arms shaking, dragging the scent-heavy current with her. The fish trailed it, hungry, blind to the shore now. The water at the hidden spot went flat and clean. The trench swallowed the smell. The pale creature vanished after it, following the false trail down into dark water that no longer touched the cottage. Marina surfaced once more, thinner than before. "It's under the trench now. The smell dies there. Nothing points to your door." She sank. "Don't call again. I've little left." Lilith climbed from the surf. The circling was over. No hunter would read a path to her children from this water. But Marina was spent, and the sea had one less friend to spare. The shore was safe. The debt to the deep had grown.
