Chapter 2

Linh crouched at the edge of the clearing, her bladed forearms pressed against the dirt. The flowers swayed in front of her, their twisted petals releasing waves of sweet scent. She counted her breaths—one, two, three—and waited. Her compound eyes tracked every shadow, every movement in the tall grass. Minutes passed. Then an hour. Her legs didn't tire. Her focus didn't waver. This was the first lesson: patience sharpened the hunt as much as speed did. A small creature finally emerged from the underbrush, drawn by the flower scent. Linh's wings buzzed once. Her body coiled. She lunged forward, forearms striking in a blur of green and silver. The kill was clean and instant. She lifted the creature and felt her mandibles work automatically, efficiently. Her cells hummed with satisfaction as she fed. This was perfection—not the kill itself, but the precision of it. She had much to learn, but she had made her first real strike in this new form. But killing wasn't enough. She needed to test speed, reaction time, the limits of her strength. That required live prey, held and ready. Linh studied the clearing and saw the answer. She pressed her forearms together and pulled them apart slowly. Thin strands emerged from glands near her wrists, sticky and strong. The silk caught the light, shimmering with colors that shifted as she moved. She worked through the night, weaving between the flower stalks. Each strand connected to the next in patterns she didn't plan but somehow knew. By dawn, the web stretched across the clearing—intricate, mesmerizing, strong enough to hold whatever wandered into it. The second creature came at daybreak, attracted by the iridescent colors. It stumbled into the silk and thrashed. The web held firm. Linh approached slowly, compound eyes taking in every detail of the struggling animal. She could feed now or wait. She could test her venom or her grip strength. This was control, and control meant progress toward perfection.
