Chapter 1

Three days before the treaty talks, Lira Dawnmere read a letter that could end them. She stood at the tall window of her tower, the one carved with moons, and held a page passed hand to hand through the courts. It named her a traitor. It said her silence hid a secret deal with the enemy. Lira had spent twenty years trying to end the war between the fae courts and the mortal kingdoms. Now a lie was killing that chance before she could speak a word for peace. She could not deny it aloud. That was the cruelty of it. Lira could not tell a lie; her throat glowed gold whenever she tried to bend the truth. So she used silence like a blade. But silence looked like guilt now. Her owl shifted on its perch, feathers pale as frost, watching her fold the letter. A knock came. The hooded figure slipped in before she answered. Silas Whisper never waited for permission. They traded rumors the way merchants traded coin, and half these courts owed them favors. Lira had bought their silence before. Now she needed their truth. "You look like a woman they already hanged," Silas said. They dropped into her chair without asking. "The whispers are mine. I carried them. I want you to know that before you thank me." Lira's jaw tightened. She did not speak. "Someone paid me to spread them," Silas went on. "The war faction. The ones who profit while the fighting lasts." They set a small pouch on her desk. "I keep what passes through my hands. Habit. This passed through." Inside lay a seal, gold and heavy, stamped with a crown and a set of scales. Lira turned it in her fingers. She knew the true court seal by heart. This one had a flaw in the lion's paw. A forgery. Whoever ordered the whispers had also forged royal authority to fund them. "They used this to draw money from the treasury," Silas said. "Coin the crown never approved. That is real treason. Not your quiet." Lira met their eyes. She could not lie, so her nod meant everything. She would take this to the council floor. The council met at dusk. The hardliners had already poisoned the room; she felt the cold looks. Lira laid the forged seal on the table. She let it sit. Then she pointed to the flawed paw, and to the treasury ledgers Silas had named. She spoke six sentences, each one true, each one landing. Her throat stayed clear as water. The room turned. Nobles who had shunned her now stared at the faction's empty chairs. Their leaders had already fled the hall. The whispers broke. The talks would proceed. But the war faction was loose in the city now, exposed and desperate, with three days and nothing left to lose.
