Chapter 2

The council had approved the talks, but Lira Dawnmere slept badly. The war faction was loose in the city, and Silas Whisper had helped her only because they chose to. Nothing bound them. A broker sold to the highest bidder. If someone paid Silas more, her old secrets could flow back into the courts. She dressed at dawn and went to find them before that could happen. She met Silas in the embassy hall, under its tall stained windows. The hooded broker leaned against a carved pillar, watching a human girl scrub the floor nearby. That was Jade Carvell, the tribute the courts had bought and could not bend. Two nobles had ordered her to kneel. Jade stayed on her feet, jaw set, and kept scrubbing. "You want a promise," Silas said. They did not look at Lira. "I don't give those. I give trades." Lira set a moonpetal blossom on the pillar's ledge. Its pale petals glowed faintly. It meant nothing to Silas. She needed something that did. So she chose the one weapon she trusted: the truth she could not fake. "I know three things about you," Lira said. "You want out of this trade. You have looked for a clean reason to walk away. You have not found one." Silas went still. Her throat stayed clear. Every word was true, and they knew it. "I am your reason," Lira said. "Work for me openly. Not for coin. For the war's end. When the treaty holds, no one buys whispers of a dead war." "Words," Silas said. "You could sell me out first." "I can't lie," Lira said. "Ask me anything." Jade had stopped scrubbing. She stood, rag dripping, and looked at both of them. "She can't," Jade said. "I've watched her three days. Her throat lights gold when she tries. She hasn't tried once." She dropped the rag. "Trust that or don't. But she's the only one here who can't cheat you." Silas turned toward the girl who refused to kneel. Something shifted under the hood. "The girl's blunt," they said. "I don't waste words," Jade said, and picked her rag back up. Silas pushed off the pillar. They drew a small ledger from their belt and set it in Lira's hand. "Names," they said. "Every noble the faction paid. Every safe house I know. My accounts, open. That's the trade. I work in the light now." Lira gripped the ledger. The alliance was no longer a shrug in a dark room. It had a price both sides could see. "They'll come for both of us now," Silas said. "A broker who turns is worse than an enemy. And they'll know I gave you these names within a day." Lira opened the ledger. The first page named a noble who sat on the treaty council itself. The war faction was not only loose in the city. One of them still held a seat at her table.
