Chapter 3

The ledger told Lira where the gold had gone, but not where the war faction had run. Names on a page could not spend the treasury's coin. The fled nobles could. Somewhere in the borderlands they sat on stolen gold, buying knives and fresh lies to poison the talks. Every day she waited, they grew stronger. So Lira left the embassy hall at dusk and went to find someone who could track them. The sanctuary sat under living branches, wrapped in moss and vine. Two lanterns burned by its low stone door. Inside, a small sylvan woman crushed leaves in her palm and breathed over them. The air went sharp, then sweet. This was Callie Palau, a scent-weaver Silas had named as the one tracker who could follow a trail no hound could. She did not look up. "You want the ones who ran," Callie said. "They carry gold. Gold from a treasury smells of old wax and older hands. I can find that in the wind." She held out the crushed leaves. "But I don't work blind. Show me what they touched." Lira set the ledger open on the mossy stone. "Names. Safe houses. The accounts they emptied." Callie read fast. Her jaw tightened. "Three houses near the border. The gold moved through all three." She looked up, eyes gold as her flowers. "One holds it now. But I need a truth to seal the trail. A scent only holds if the words behind it are true. Lie to me and it scatters." "I can't lie," Lira said. Her throat stayed dark. "Ask." "Do you mean to end the war? Not win it. End it." "Yes," Lira said. No gold. The word rang clean. Callie smiled. She poured her leaf-oil into the lantern flame. Smoke rose, then bent, pulling toward the door as if a hand drew it. "There," she said. "The last house. Behind the third bend of the eastern water. That's where the gold sleeps tonight." Lira sent word to the council guard before dawn. She gave them the house, the scent-trail, and the ledger's account numbers. By noon the riders returned. They had taken the safe house and the gold. Three of the fled nobles were in chains. The treasury's coin was locked in a council vault again. The war faction could not buy another knife. But the guard captain set a folded note in Lira's hand. It was found on a captured noble. She opened it. The hand was neat, courtly, sure of itself. "The gold was only the seed," it read. "The blade is already at your table. When the council votes, you will learn its name." No signature. Lira folded the note twice. The gold was hers now. But the noble in her own council chamber, the last name in Silas's ledger, had just told her the strike was coming. And it would come from the seat beside her own.
