Chapter 1

Lira Neswick sold whispers, and today one nearly sank her. She stood in the open court of Vetchhollow, ink still wet on her fingers, and leaned toward a duke's ear. She told him the treasury minister planned to raise his taxes. She had told the minister the opposite an hour before. Both men trusted her. Neither knew she played them against each other. That was how she meant to rule Vetchhollow — not from the throne, but from behind every noble who sat near it. Then she saw the problem. Across the marble floor, a rival scribe watched her lips move. He tilted his head, reading her the way she read others. In open court, every murmur carried. One clever enemy could piece together her lies and expose the whole game. She finished her sentence, smiled, and stepped back. Her heart pounded. She could not whisper safely here. She needed walls. She left before the rival could follow. Outside, her gryphon waited, gold feathers catching the light, its leonine body still and proud. It let her mount without a sound. She rode through narrow streets until she reached a tall townhouse. Dark ink stains streaked its brown walls and dripped from the window ledges. The green shutters were closed. A carved silverbell vine framed the front door, its hollow roots twisting up the stone. The house had belonged to her old master, dead a year now. The deed sat unclaimed. Lira had the key. She unlocked the door and stepped into rooms full of dust, books, and quiet. No court. No rivals. No open floor to carry her voice. She walked each level and counted the doors. A parlor for guests. A rear stair for secret arrivals. A cellar where no sound escaped. She set her worn leather satchel on the desk and pulled out fresh paper. Then she wrote three letters in her careful hand. Each invited a different noble to call on her here, alone, on a different night. Come discuss a matter that must stay private, she wrote. She sealed each letter and pressed her mark into the wax. By dusk her gryphon had carried the letters across the city. Lira stood in the empty parlor and lit a single candle. She had traded the crowded court for four walls that answered only to her. Now she could meet each noble unseen, feed each one a different truth, and no rival could listen at the edge of the room. The first reply came that night. A servant slipped it under the door. She broke the seal and read one line: *I will come. But I am not the only one who wants your ear.* Lira smiled and set the note beside her candle. Her secret house was ready. So was the danger of filling it.
