Chapter 2

Lira read the warning note twice, then blew out the candle. One line stayed with her: others wanted her ear. If two nobles arrived on the same night, they would meet on her doorstep. They would see each other. They would learn she counseled them both. Her whole game rested on keeping them apart. Her house had one front door and one rear stair. That was not enough. She studied the townhouse the next morning. The parlor faced the street. The rear stair climbed to a small back room. A guest at the front would hear a guest at the back. She needed a second place to send them, somewhere off her own walls, where an early caller could wait without knowing why. Down the road stood a roadside inn, broad and timeworn, its lanterns lit against the gray morning. Travelers passed through it every hour. No one there watched who came and went. Lira walked inside and paid the keeper for a private upstairs room, held under a false name. She told him a plain thing: when a sealed note arrived bearing her mark, he was to give it to whichever guest asked for the woman in silk. He counted her coins and asked nothing. Now she had two doors, not one. The inn would hold the early noble. Her townhouse would hold the other. A servant could carry each man where she wanted him, and neither would cross the other's path. She tested it that night. Two nobles had both answered for the same evening. Lira sent one a note through her gryphon, sealed with her mark: *Wait for me at the inn down the road. Ask the keeper for the woman in silk.* The bird returned an hour later. The noble had gone to the inn. The second noble arrived at her front door. She led him into the parlor and lit a fresh candle. She leaned close and told him the tax minister feared his growing lands. He believed her. He left by the rear stair, pleased, seeing no one. Then Lira walked to the inn. She climbed to the private room. The first noble waited there, restless, a cup untouched before him. He complained of the wait. She smiled and sat. She told him the opposite tale — that the minister sought his favor, not his ruin. He left the inn believing he alone held her secret. Two nobles. One evening. Neither saw the other. Lira walked home under the lanterns, certain now that her house could feed the whole court its separate truths. But the inn keeper had watched her climb those stairs. He had seen the mark on her seal, and the gryphon that carried it. A man who took coin to hold her secrets could be paid more to sell them. Lira had bought her second door. She had also handed a stranger the first thread of her scheme.
