Chapter 1

Men called Marcus the Lovable Viking, and he had beaten a man half to death to keep the name. His rule was simple: his crew did not touch women or children. He learned it in a burned village, where he found a boy sitting alone in the dirt. Now Marcus stood on the deck of his longship and watched his men mutter over their oars. The name held them. So did fear. He no longer knew which one held harder. Marcus called a landing on a stretch of coast. A fishing village sat above the beach, cook-fires still smoking. He gave the order himself. "Take the silver. The nets. Leave the people be." Then he did something new. He walked back to the ship alone and climbed to the dragon-headed stern. He would watch from there. He would not stand over them. He wanted to see what his men did when his fists were far away. Franklin led the first row up the sand. He carried his axe loose and his round shield high, red beard bright against the smoke. Benjamin followed, golden-bearded, quieter, his eyes always sliding toward Marcus. They knew he was watching. That was the whole test, and Bjorn hated that it was. A woman ran from a doorway with a child on her hip. Franklin stepped into her path. He raised his axe. Marcus’ hand went to the rail. He did not shout. He waited. Franklin held there a long moment. Then he lowered the axe. "Move, then," he growled, and shoved past her toward the silver. He had not spared her for mercy. He had spared her because Bjorn might be looking. Marcus saw it in the man's shoulders, and it turned his stomach. They came back with full sacks and no blood on their hands. On the beach Marcus faced them. "You held the rule," he said. "We held it because you sat up there like a crow," Franklin said. He spat in the sand. "Turn your back for real, Marcus. See what we do then." No man laughed. No man argued. Benjamin looked at his boots. That silence was its own answer. Marcus had his proof now, and it was worse than not knowing. His crew obeyed the rule. They did not believe in it. Fear had done the work, and fear only worked while he watched. The name he guarded sat on nothing but his own two fists. He made his choice on the sand. He would not rule by fear alone anymore. He needed his men to want the rule, not dread it. "Load the ship," he told them. He looked at Franklin as he said it. "When we make port, you and I talk. All of us. Not fists. Talk." Franklin's brow creased, surprised. For the first time, the Lovable Viking had shown his crew something other than a raised hand.
