Chapter 3

Lucien laid the relic on the table and turned the lamp close. He had sealed one shadow back inside it and watched the crystal crack wider for his trouble. Now he meant to learn why the stone was breaking. He bent over the violet glass and studied the dark thing still moving inside. Elara sat across from him. She had followed him into this cottage without a single complaint, and he still would not say her name aloud, not even here. She watched his hands shake over the crystal and reached out to steady them. "Let me look," she said. "You've stared at it so long you've stopped seeing it." He almost refused. Then he slid the relic toward her. She lifted it to the light and turned it slow, the way a jeweler checks a stone. "The cracks don't run from the outside," she said. "They start in the middle. Something inside is pushing out." Lucien leaned close. She was right. The two lines did not begin at the edge. They spread from the dark shape coiled at the heart of the glass. The shadow he had sealed was not trapped. It was growing. "Every time I send one back, I feed it," he said. The truth landed cold in his chest. "The crystal isn't a cage. It's a wall holding back water. And the water keeps rising." Elara set the relic down. "Then you can't send any more back." "If I don't, they get inside. If I do, the stone breaks faster." He pressed his thumbs against his eyes. Both paths ended the same way. She was quiet. Then she touched the silver chain where it met the clasp. "This mark here. I've seen it before." She pulled her collar aside and showed him the pale crescent birthmark below her shoulder. The curve matched the crescent stamped into the relic's frame. Lucien went still. He had carried the stone for years and never known the shape meant anything. "Where did you get that mark?" "I was born with it." Her voice stayed calm, but the color drained from her face. "Lucien. The crystal isn't just breaking on its own. It answers to something. Maybe to someone." He understood then. The relic had not chosen him by chance. It was tied to her, the one he had tried to keep hidden, the one he would not name. The shadows were not only hunting his family. They were hunting the blood that matched the stone. "That's why it's failing," he said. "It's reaching for you." Elara closed her hand over the crescent on the frame. The violet glow flared bright against her palm, brighter than it had for him. The cracks stopped spreading. For one breath, the stone went quiet and whole. Then it dimmed, and a third crack opened beneath her fingers. Lucien stared at it. He had found his answer. Keeping her safe was the one thing breaking the only thing that kept her safe.
