Chapter 4

Lucien watched the third crack settle in the violet stone. The cottage had kept them safe, but he finally understood the truth. The walls answered to Elara's blood. The relic was pulling her closer, and her nearness was killing the one thing holding the shadows back. He stood and pulled on his coat. "We're leaving," he said. "Tonight." Elara did not move. "Leaving where? You said this place was the only safe one." "It's safe because of your blood. That's the problem." He took her hand. Her fingers were cold. "The stone breaks faster every hour you're near it. I need a wall that doesn't need you to hold it up. Somewhere the shadows can't follow the relic in." He remembered his grandmother's last letter. She had named two refuges, not one. The second was older. A place marked with runes carved before his family ever made their bargain. He had always thought the first cottage was enough. It wasn't anymore. They ran through the dark. The relic burned warm against his chest the whole way, and twice he felt the air behind them go thick and cold. Shadows. He did not stop to send them back. Feeding the stone would only speed its death. The second cottage waited at the edge of a black wood. Moss crawled up its stone walls. Runes were cut deep around every window and door, glowing faint gold in the night. No keyhole marked the frame. No crystal was needed. The protection lived in the stone itself. Elara touched a rune by the door. The gold flared under her palm, then steadied. "It doesn't pull at me," she whispered. "The other one always pulled. This one just... holds." Lucien pushed the heavy door open. Inside, the air felt still and dry. He drew Elara in and shut the door behind them. The runes brightened across every wall. A shadow struck the stone outside. The gold held. The thing slid away and did not return. "It worked," Elara breathed. The color came back to her face. "Lucien, it's not breaking. Nothing's breaking." He pressed his back to the warm stone and let himself breathe. For the first time in weeks, her safety did not cost him the walls. He lifted the relic from his neck and held it up. The three cracks still webbed the violet glass. The dark shape inside still coiled and grew. The cottage no longer needed the stone. But the stone still held a shadow that fed on nothing now, trapped and swelling with no release. He turned it in the firelight. The crystal had been breaking because he kept feeding it. Here, he would feed it nothing. And a starved thing, he knew, does not simply die. It claws harder at its cage. He looked at the deepest crack and understood his next danger was not outside the door. It was in his hand.
