Chapter 26

Lumina had named Ivan the keeper. But a name was not enough. She knew he could listen to a single root. She did not yet know if he could lead a whole forest. So she stayed a while longer, and she taught him everything. Each morning she walked the roots with him. She showed him which paths ran cold and which ran warm. She taught him to feel the heart's slow pulse under his palm. Ivan learned fast. He asked questions she had never thought to ask. "When two roots fail at once," he said, "which do we warm first?" "The one nearest the heart," Lumina answered. He nodded and wrote it in his memory. But caring for roots was only half the task. The folk still needed a voice. Lumina brought Ivan before them in the great hall. She stepped back and let him speak alone. At first the folk kept their eyes on her. Ivan did not raise his voice. He knelt beside a frightened young fairy and showed her how to warm a cold root with her hands. One by one, the folk turned from Lumina to him. Lenora watched from the door. She came to Lumina's side. "They follow him now," she said. "Not from fear. From trust." Lumina felt the truth of it. The change had happened without magic. Then Lumina raised the star-tipped wand. She did not take Ivan's power. She had none of his to take. Instead she called light from the emblem at her chest, a ring of gold and pink. It spread over the whole hall. Her wings opened wide behind her, every color at once, wide as the roof. The folk gasped. Ivan did not step back. "This is the last thing I give you," Lumina said. "Not my strength. My blessing." She touched the wand's tip to his shoulder. The light did not enter him. It settled over the folk instead, warming every face. "They are yours to keep now," she said. "And you are theirs." Ivan looked at the crowd. He no longer waited for her word. He raised his hand and the folk quieted. "We warm the roots at dawn and dusk," he said. "We take turns. No one guards alone." The folk answered together, one voice. It was the sound Lumina had waited a hundred years to hear. She lowered the wand. Her work as leader was done. The forest had a keeper who was not her, and folk who followed him gladly. But as the light faded, Lumina felt a pull deep in the earth. The heart beat, yet slower than before. It still leaned on her. Ivan could hold the folk. He could not yet hold the heart alone. That last bond was hers to break, and she did not know how.
