Chapter 27

The heart still leaned on Lumina. She felt it each night, a slow pull in the earth, tugging her back to the task she thought she had passed on. Ivan could hold the folk. He could not yet hold the heart. That last bond was hers, and she did not know how to break it. She sat outside her wooden home and searched for the answer. Ivan found her there at dawn. He did not speak of roots. He knelt beside her and took her hand. "You gave the folk a keeper," he said. "But you carry the heart alone. Let me carry it with you." His green eyes held no fear. Over the long seasons of teaching him, Lumina had come to lean on his steady voice. Now she understood she leaned on more than that. She had come to love him. They did not part again. The years passed gently. Lumina raised her home into a true one. Ivan warmed the roots at her side, and the heart grew strong on their shared care. Lenora watched them, glad. "You searched for a way to hand the heart on," she said. "You were looking for magic. It was never magic." Then came the child. Lumina held her at the first light. The baby had wings like folded gold and hair that flowed long even in sleep. Lumina named her Aurora. When she pressed the newborn to her chest, she felt the pull in the earth shift. The heart no longer reached for Lumina. It reached for the child. "She holds it," Lumina whispered. "All of it." She felt her own power draw away, gentle as a tide going out. The emblem at her chest, once bright with loving starlight, faded into the baby's small hands. Aurora did not stir. The power settled into her as if it had always belonged there. Lumina lifted her wand one last time. The star at its tip glowed, then dimmed. She was not diminished this time. She was freed. "Love was the answer," she said. "Not a wand. Not a sacrifice. I made the next keeper, and the heart chose her." Ivan gathered mother and child close. Lumina's wings spread wide behind her, every color at once, brighter than they had ever burned. Then they eased, like petals closing at night. She was tired now, the way no immortal had ever been tired. "The heart is hers," Lumina told him. "The folk are yours. There is nothing left for me to hold." She kissed Aurora's brow. She looked at Ivan and smiled. Lumina drew one deep breath. Her wings settled. Her eyes closed. The pull in the earth was gone, and it did not return to her. It stayed with the sleeping child. Lumina was happy. She let go. The forest's heart beat on, held now by the next generation.
