Chapter 28

Lumina was gone. The forest's heart beat inside her child now, and no one had shown that child how to hold it. Ivan sat by the cradle and watched Aurora sleep. His daughter's small hands glowed with power he could not touch. When she cried, the walls trembled. When she laughed, light burst from the wooden home in a rainbow flood, and the roots outside twisted toward her without control. Ivan knew the folk and the roots. He did not know this. He pressed a hand to the cradle and felt afraid for the first time in years. The wand lay on the table, its star dark since Lumina's last breath. Ivan lifted it. He tried to steady the power the way she had taught him. Nothing answered. The wand was hers, not his. Aurora woke and reached for it. The star flared white, then died, and the baby wailed. Her wings snapped open, wide as the room, every color at once. The living wood of the ceiling cracked. Ivan could not calm what he could not reach. Then the door opened on its own. A family of foxes stepped inside, marked with glowing lines along their fur. They had been Lumina's companions, changed by her magic over a hundred years. They had loved her. Now they came for her child. The largest one climbed to the cradle and pressed its nose to Aurora's cheek. The baby's cry softened. Her wild wings eased down. Ivan understood. The animals knew the heart's magic through their old bond with Lumina. They could not use the power, but they could steady the one who held it. He set the wand aside and let them work. The foxes circled the cradle. Their glowing marks pulsed slow and calm. Aurora watched the lights and grew still. Her hands stopped throwing sparks. The roots outside settled back into the soil. But steady was not the same as safe. Ivan lifted the wand once more and knelt beside the largest fox. "She'll need more than calm," he said. "She'll need to learn." He touched the dark star to the fox's marked shoulder. A thread of Lumina's old magic still slept there, in that ancient bond. The star woke. It glowed, faint and warm, and a soft emblem of loving light bloomed above the cradle, the same one that had once burned at Lumina's chest. Aurora reached up and caught it. This time the light did not explode. It curled into her palm and stayed, gentle, held. The baby smiled. Ivan let out his held breath. The foxes lay down around the cradle, guardians now. The danger had passed. Aurora would not burn the forest tonight. But she was still an infant with the whole heart inside her, and she could not yet awaken it alone. She would need years, and teachers, and the animals who loved her mother. Ivan looked at his sleeping child and knew his work had only begun.
