Chapter 29

The foxes had calmed Aurora, but calm was only a start. Ivan sat by the cradle at dawn and watched his daughter sleep. The whole forest's power lived inside her small body. He could feel it there, restless as a caged wind. Lumina had known how to teach it. Lumina was gone. Ivan had the folk, the roots, and a wand that no longer answered him. He did not have her. He lifted the wand from the table. Its star sat dark. He needed one thing from it now, not power to command, but a way to hear his daughter. When Aurora cried, he never knew what she wanted. He touched the dark star to the shoulder of the largest fox. "Help me understand her," he said. The fox pressed its glowing marks against the wand. A thread of Lumina's old magic still slept in that bond. The star warmed. A soft emblem of loving light bloomed above the cradle, the same one that had steadied Aurora before. This time it did not curl into the baby's hand. It spread, thin and bright, until it touched the foxes and Ivan too. Then he heard her. Not words. Feelings, carried through the light like a shared breath. Aurora was hungry. Aurora was frightened of the empty place where her mother's warmth had been. Ivan gasped. The foxes had felt this all along. Now the light let them pass it to him. "She misses her mother," Ivan said. His voice broke. The largest fox laid its head on his knee. Through the emblem he felt the animals answer, steady and sure. They had loved Lumina for a hundred years. They would carry that love to her child. They would speak for Aurora until she could speak for herself. Aurora woke and reached up. The rainbow wings snapped open, wide as the room. Ivan braced for the ceiling to crack again. But this time he understood. She was not raging. She was reaching for the light that let her be heard. He guided the emblem gently into her palm. It settled there, warm and whole. Her wings folded down. She smiled at her father for the first time. Ivan set the wand aside. The danger of the wild power had not ended. Aurora still held the sleeping heart of the whole forest, and she could not wake it alone for years. But the silence between them had broken. Through the foxes and the loving light, Ivan could finally learn what his daughter needed. He could teach her. The animals would guide her when he faltered. He looked at the family of foxes curled around the cradle. "Then we do this together," he said. "All of us. Until she's ready." The foxes' marks pulsed slow and calm. Aurora slept, the light held safe in her hand. The forest's heart would wait for her, and now she would not wait alone.
