Chapter 30

Seven years passed in the forest. Ivan raised Aurora with the foxes at his side, teaching her one small lesson at a time. The child who once cracked ceilings with her wings now walked the clearing on light feet. Her hair had grown long and cold, blue at the tips, sparkling like a night sky. Wings like her mother's rose from her back. Her father's green in her eyes. The years had not been easy. But this morning Ivan meant to prove she had come far enough. He led her to the great tree sanctuary. The foxes trailed behind, their marked fur glowing soft. "Today you hold the light on your own," Ivan said. He lifted Lumina's wand. The star at its top had woken years ago, and it pulsed now like a slow heartbeat. "No help from me. No help from them." Aurora looked at the foxes. The largest one pressed its head to her hand. It had guarded her since she was a baby, speaking for her when she had no words. Now she needed no one to speak for her. "I'm ready," she said. Ivan touched the wand's star. A glowing emblem bloomed above them, warm and bright, the same loving light that had steadied her as a baby. It drifted down. Once it would have burned her. Once it needed the foxes to hold it steady. This time it settled into Aurora's small palm and stayed. Her wings snapped open, wide and rainbow-bright, sparkling like glass in the sun. Ivan tensed out of old habit. But no wildness came. Aurora held the light without shaking. She smiled at it, then at him. "It doesn't fight me anymore," she said. Ivan let out a long breath. He knelt and took her hands, the light warm between them. "Your mother put all the forest's power in you," he said. "For seven years it was too big for you to carry. Now you can hold a piece of it and not lose yourself." His voice caught. "You've grown into it, Aurora." The foxes circled them and bowed their heads. Around the clearing, forest folk had gathered to watch. They had loved this child and shielded her all her life. Now they saw her stand alone with her mother's light and not falter. A soft sound rose from them, part cheer, part relief. But Aurora's smile faded. She turned toward the dark wall of trees far beyond the sanctuary. "Papa," she said. "The heart. I can feel it now. It's cold." She pressed her free hand to her chest. "It's sleeping, and the glow is fading." Ivan followed her gaze. He had hoped for more years of teaching before this. But the child could sense the forest's dying heart at last, the way only its true keeper could. She was seven, and the task her mother left her had begun. "Then we go to it," Ivan said quietly. "Together. When you're ready."
