Chapter 33

Morning came bright over the clearing. The heart beat strong and pink beneath the trees. Aurora woke by the fire and found Ivan already awake, the old book open in his lap. She sat beside him. "Papa," she said, "the forest is safe now. But you're still writing." Ivan turned a page. His finger rested on the red ribbon that marked the last empty leaves. "I'm finishing the story," he said. "Your mother started it. You woke the heart. But a story needs an ending, or the folk who read it later won't know how it turned out." Aurora looked at the carved cover, at the spirals worn smooth by two hands before hers. She understood. The waking was done. What remained was to close the book. But Aurora frowned. "If we close it, who keeps the heart when I sleep? Mama slept a hundred years, and the heart nearly died." Ivan set his pen down. He had feared this same thing since the night she merged with the ruby. The forest could not lean on one keeper again. "Then we write that too," he said. He called the foxes. The largest one padded close and pressed its glowing side to Aurora's knee. "Your mother taught the folk to guard the heart. She taught the foxes to teach you. The chain doesn't break when you rest. It passes on." Aurora placed her hand on the fox's warm fur and felt the bond hum through it. She took the pen from her father. Her rainbow wings lifted a little as she leaned over the page. She wrote in a child's careful hand. She wrote that the heart was awake. She wrote that the folk kept it, that the foxes watched, that a keeper would always rise from love, not power. Then she drew a small heart at the bottom and set the pen down. Ivan read her words twice. His eyes were wet. "That's the ending," he said. "That's the true one." He lifted the ribbon and laid it flat across the finished page. Then he closed the cover slow. The spirals met. The book was full. Aurora stood and walked to the great ruby. It beat under her palm, steady and warm. She spoke to it soft, the way her mother once had. "You won't sleep alone again," she said. "We're all here now." The heart pulsed brighter, as if it heard. That evening the folk gathered in the great hall. Ivan carried the closed book and set it on a stone stand at the room's center. He told them it held the whole story, from the first fading to the last waking. "Read it," he said, "so no keeper ever stands alone." The folk pressed close and touched the carved cover with quiet hands. Aurora stood among them, no longer the last hope of the forest, but one heart among many. The story was written. The keeping had begun.
