Chapter 34

The morning after the folk read the book, Aurora walked to the ruby heart alone. It beat pink and warm under the trees. She placed her hand on it and felt the whole forest breathe. Ivan followed with the old book tucked under his arm. He watched his daughter, seven years old, standing where her mother once stood. The waking was done. But one thing still troubled him, and he had to say it aloud. "You did what your mother did," Ivan said. "You woke the heart. But you carry it alone, the way she did. That's the part I fear." Aurora turned. Her blue-tipped hair caught the light. She had heard the story of the hundred-year sleep. She knew the heart had nearly died while her mother rested. "Then I won't carry it alone," Aurora said. She lifted her mother's wand. Starlight ran along its wooden length. She raised her free hand, and the foxes came. The largest pressed its glowing side to her leg. More slipped from the trees, each marked with the same soft lines, a whole family of them. They circled the ruby heart. Aurora closed her eyes. She sent her light down through her feet into the roots. She did not push it all into the heart. Instead she spread it thin, into the foxes, into the ground, into the folk who watched from the hall's edge. A warm emblem bloomed in the air above the ruby, a wheel of pink and gold that turned slow. It was not hers alone now. It touched every bond in the clearing. "See," she said. "The heart doesn't feed on one keeper. It feeds on all of us." The ruby pulsed brighter than Ivan had ever seen it. Her wings opened wide behind her, rainbow feathers catching every color of the emblem's light. The foxes lifted their heads. The folk stepped closer. For the first time, the heart's glow spread evenly across the whole clearing, not from Aurora, but from the ring of them together. Ivan felt his own chest warm. The wand's light had reached him too. He understood then what his daughter had solved. When she slept, the light would not fade. It lived in the foxes, in the folk, in the roots, in him. The chain her mother forged in fear, Aurora had woven in trust. He opened the book one last time. He turned past the finished pages to the worn cover. "Your mother started this," he said. "You didn't just end it. You made sure it can never end." Aurora smiled and lowered the wand. The emblem faded slow, but its warmth stayed in the ground. The heart beat steady, sure, held by many hands. Aurora set her palm on the fox's fur and felt the whole forest hum back through it. The keeping was no longer a burden passed down. It was shared, and it would hold.
