Luna Fayweather knelt beside a feverish child in a back room of Nettlevale, her hands steady, her mind already counting coins for an academy that did not yet exist. She pressed two fingers to the boy's throat and felt the heat answer her like a question. Outside, boots scraped the dirt path. Three sets. Slow. She had heard that pace before, in stories about healers who vanished. Luna tucked the unsigned document deeper into her satchel and listened. She lifted the boy, slipped through a hinged bookshelf, and stepped into the bakery front. Flour dusted the counter. A warm loaf sat cooling beside a hand-painted sign. Luna set the child on a stool, smeared flour on her own sleeves, and opened the door before the boots could knock. She smiled like a baker. She sold them bread. They left without looking twice. When the path was empty again, Luna pressed her palm to the shelf that hid her real work and understood: the academy would not be a place they could find. It would be many places, wearing aprons. That night, Luna carried the carved wooden sign outside and hung it where the moonlight caught the letters. Bakery Healing. A quiet word to those who knew. She returned to the boy, broke his fever before dawn, and wrote a single line in her ledger: one safe. Then she began drafting the next bakery, in the next town, under the next ordinary roof. Before the sun rose, Luna lifted the silver locket from her collar and opened it. A pressed sprig lay inside, the herb she had failed to find in time, three winters ago. She closed it gently and tied it around the sleeping boy's wrist. He would carry the proof now. The hunters had passed her door and learned nothing. The academy had a shape at last — hidden, scattered, alive — and somewhere out there, another gifted girl was waiting to be found.
