Chapter 2

Morning light found Luna at the bakery counter, kneading dough she did not plan to bake. Her ledger lay open beside the flour, the unsigned document tucked beneath it like a stone she could not stop carrying. A shadow crossed the window. Not boots this time. A single figure, tall, familiar in a way that made her hands go still. The man who had walked three steps from signing stood outside her door. He was not carrying a pen. He was carrying a folded piece of paper, and his face was set the way faces set before bad news. Luna wiped her hands on her apron and reached for the latch. He did not come inside. He tipped his head toward the garden behind the bakery, where a small stone elf statue stood among the herbs, a carved wand resting in its hand. Luna followed. She had planted those herbs herself. He stopped beside the statue and set a swirled blue stone on its base. She knew that stone. It had been tucked behind a loose board in her second bakery, two towns over. "I have one from each of your roofs," he said. "I have been listening to you for months." Then he unfolded the paper. Two sheets, pressed flat. One was a land claim, stamped and sealed, naming her bakeries as unlawful builds on lost ground. The other was a reward poster. A drawing of a young elf woman with steady hands. A price beside her face. "They do not have your name yet," he said. "They will. I came to tell you to stop. Burn the signs. Send the children home. If you keep building, I cannot protect what I once almost signed for." He set both papers on the statue's open palm and stepped back. Luna picked up the reward poster. She folded it once, slid it beside the unsigned document in her satchel, and met his eyes. "Thank you for the warning," she said. "I am not stopping." He looked at her a long moment, then walked away without another word. Luna stood alone in the herb garden, three papers heavy against her ribs, and understood the shape of the next problem. She was no longer hidden. She was hunted, named in ink she had not signed, and every bakery on her map was now a door someone else could open.
