Chapter 1

Lyra Brightsage had solved the grove's oldest riddle in her head, and no one believed her. She stood at the base of the great tree college, its pastel towers coiled around living branches, and read the notice pinned to the roots. The secret circle of arcane scholars would accept new applicants. They wanted written proof of talent. Lyra had cast a hundred spells and recorded none. Her magic lived only in her hands and her memory. To a scholar, she was empty. She pressed her palm to the trunk and whispered thanks to the world tree, the way her people always did. Then she got to work. She had one day before the messenger came to collect submissions. She could not write down years of casting. But she could cast one spell so clearly that any watcher would understand it at once. She chose a hard one. She coaxed a single pale frond from the mushroom-soft foliage of the grove and made it bloom out of season. She held the shape steady in the air, then bound it into a slow-turning knot of light. Most casters needed both hands and long chants. Lyra used three words and a flick of her fingers. The knot held. It glowed above her palm, exact and controlled. But a glowing knot fades. She needed it seen and judged. The messenger arrived at dusk. Zelith Rootwhisper taught the world tree arts and carried word to the hidden council. He wore the pale robe and the tree-mark medallion of a servant of the tree. He moved slowly, studying each applicant's scrolls with a patient, doubtful frown. When he reached Lyra, he held out his hand for parchment. "I have none," Lyra said. His frown deepened. "Then you have nothing for me to carry." "Watch instead." She lifted the knot of light from her palm and let it turn. Then she split it, folded it, and rebuilt it into a smaller, tighter form without speaking a word. The trick was silence. No chant meant no crutch. Zelith went still. His doubtful frown broke into something sharper, closer to hunger. "Do that again," he said quietly. She did. When she finished, he drew a bird from a covered basket at his hip, a small blue messenger with clever eyes. He murmured to it, then pressed his thumb to its foot as if marking a seal. The bird lifted off toward the higher towers. "I cannot carry a spell on paper," Zelith said. "So I have carried you. The council will summon you themselves. They do not do that often." He met her eyes. "They do not do it kindly, either." The bird vanished into the branches. Lyra had her proof at last. But she had traded a page she could revise for a summons she could not refuse.
