Chapter 2
The summons dropped Lyra at the college gates before dawn. The pastel towers coiled up the world tree's trunk, still and quiet. Zelith's warning circled in her head. The council did not test kindly. She had no idea what challenge waited, or how to ready herself for it. She pressed her palm to the bark for luck and stepped inside.
A leafy walkway led her to a shared dorm nook, two beds woven into living branches. A boy already sat on the far bed, blue-skinned, pink hair pushed back, a chunky pastel pet dozing against his hip. He looked up and smiled like he'd been waiting for her all night.
"You're the silent caster," he said. "Zephyr Lumis. Summoned, same as you. And no, I don't know what they want either." He scratched the sleepy pet's chin. "So we're both walking in blind."
Lyra sat on the other bed. "Zelith said they test hard."
"He told me nothing at all." Zephyr leaned closer. "But you already look like you're solving something. What is it?"
She was. On the low table between them lay a single sealed scroll, marked with the tree-seal. She broke it. Inside, no instructions. Only a knot of dead, dried vine, tangled past sense, and one line: Loose it before the bell.
"That's the test," Lyra said. "Not on paper. On us. Right now."
Zephyr reached for the vine. It was tied in a hundred crossings, hard as old rope. He pulled. The knot only cinched tighter. "Force makes it worse."
"Then don't force it." Lyra took the vine. She didn't touch the crossings. She studied them. The whole tangle turned on one hidden loop near the center. Pull the wrong strand and it locked. Pull that loop and it all fell open.
But her fingers were too big for the gap. She'd have to reach the loop another way.
She set the vine on the table and cast, silent, no chant, no gesture. A thin thread of light slid into the tangle and hooked the center loop. She drew it out slow. The knot shivered. Then the whole dead vine unspooled across the table, one long clean strand.
Somewhere above, a bell rang once.
Zephyr stared. "You didn't even touch it."
A voice answered from the branches overhead, dry and pleased. "That is why she passes this round. And you, Zephyr, do not." Zelith stepped onto the walkway, medallion swinging. "She read the puzzle. You wrestled it."
Lyra's chest went tight with the win. Then Zelith's eyes found her.
"You solved the easy test," he said. "That only earns you the next one. And the next culls half of you." He looked at the failed vine in Zephyr's hands, then back at her. "You're not rivals yet. You might be later. You both will stay together at the council too. Get used to each other.”
The bell rang again. The nook's warm lights dimmed. Lyra had passed. Now she shared a room with the boy she'd have to beat.
