Chapter 1

Lyra Brightwhisper had one moon to bring the four wildwood clans together, and not one of them would sit in a room the others chose. She stood at the edge of the golden stone castle, its warm towers rising over the trees, and read the last refusal aloud to herself. The River clan would not enter Oakhold ground. The Thornfolk would not cross the moss bridge. Every hall in the wildwood belonged to someone, and belonging was the whole trouble. If the clans could not even agree where to speak, her dream of a single peaceful accord would die before the first word. She had spent three days here, hoping the castle would work. It was beautiful, and empty, and everyone hated it. The River elders called it too grand. The Thornfolk said an old king built it, and old kings meant old grudges. Lyra pressed her palm to the golden wall and felt no answer, only cold stone. A place with a history was a place with a side. She needed ground that answered to no one. A purple butterfly drifted past her face, wings shaped like a small dragon's. Lyra almost swatted it. Instead she watched it climb over the treetops, steady and certain, as if it knew a road she didn't. She followed. The butterfly led her deep into the oldest part of the wood, past thickets heavy with dark berries. It settled on the trunk of a tree so vast that a door stood carved into its living wood. Lyra stopped. She knew this tree. Every clan knew it. The world-tree had grown here before any elf drew a border. No family had planted it. No king had claimed it. It simply was, older than every grudge in the wildwood. She pushed the great wooden door. It opened into a hall shaped inside the trunk itself, walls curving up in rings of ancient grain, light falling gold through openings far overhead. No banner hung here. No hearth marked a family's seat. The tree belonged to the wood, and the wood belonged to no clan. Lyra laughed out loud in the empty chamber. This was it. Ground that answered to no one, because it answered only to itself. She could stand a River elder against a Thornfolk elder here, and neither could say the other held the floor. She knelt and pressed her hand to the warm wood, the way she had pressed it to the cold stone. This time something felt right. Then the weight of it landed. A meeting place was only the invitation. The elders still had to come. Four clans who had not spoken in a generation, and now she must convince each proud leader to walk through that door and sit across from an enemy. Lyra rose, the hall wide and waiting around her. She had found the neutral ground. Now she had to fill it.
