Chapter 2
Lyra had the neutral ground. Now she needed a clan elder to believe in it. She chose the River clan first, whose elder was the most stubborn of the four. She walked to the edge of his territory and called out her invitation across the water. The old elf came to the bank and listened. When she finished, he shook his head. "A hall in the world-tree," he said. "How convenient. You bring us to one door, and Oakhold archers wait behind it. No clan holds that ground, so no clan can be blamed for our deaths." He turned away. "Prove it is neutral, girl, or do not come again."
Lyra had no proof. Words could not show him a place with no side. She walked back toward the world-tree, thinking hard. The tree answered to no one. But how could she make a suspicious old man see that with his own eyes?
A soft sound stopped her. A deer stepped from the trees, tall and calm, its antlers gleaming like polished silver. It did not run from her. It watched her with steady dark eyes, then walked toward the great tree as if it belonged there. Lyra followed. The deer passed through the carved door into the hollow hall, its hooves quiet on the ancient wood. It lay down in the center of the chamber, under the gold light falling from above, and rested there like a creature in its own home.
Then Lyra understood. The wild things obeyed no clan. A deer did not know River ground from Oakhold ground. If this animal chose the world-tree freely, it named the place as no one's and everyone's. She could not carry the tree to the elder. But she could carry proof he would trust.
She returned to the River bank the next morning. This time she did not argue. She held out a strand of silver hair from the deer's antler, and she asked the elder to walk with her, only to the edge of the wood. He came, wary, one hand near his knife. At the world-tree she stepped aside and let him look through the open door. The silver deer still rested inside, unafraid. A blue-marked panther drank from a hollow near the roots, sharing the ground with the deer as if no hunt existed here.
The old elf stared a long time. "Predator and prey," he murmured. "At peace on the same floor." He knew such creatures never chose a clan's land. Only truly neutral ground could hold them both. He looked at Lyra with new eyes. "If the wild things trust it, so can I. I will come."
Lyra had her first elder. But he set a price as he left. "I come only if you win the other three," he said. "I will not sit alone before my enemies." One yes had bought her three new refusals to overcome.
