The drake was bleeding on Lyra Fernbrook's porch, and it should not have come to her at all. No wild creature had crossed her threshold in six years. That was the length of the silence between the elves and the Whispering Grove, ever since the old pact frayed and the animals stopped answering elven voices. Lyra had spent those years alone in her root-sheltered house, brewing salves no one asked for, waiting for a sign that the bond could be mended. She knelt on the wooden boards. The drake was small, no larger than a hound, its scales dusted with pale pollen and its leafy wings crumpled against its ribs. A gash ran the length of its hind leg. It watched her with green, unblinking eyes and did not flee. Lyra pulled her satchel forward and untied three bundles of herbs: bindroot for the bleeding, silverleaf for the pain, marrow moss to hold the wound closed. Her hands remembered the work her voice had forgotten. She crushed the herbs against a flat stone until the paste smelled of cut grass and honey. The drake flinched when she touched the wound, then stilled. She pressed the paste into the gash and wrapped the leg in soft moss, tying it with a strip of linen from her sleeve. When she finished, the drake exhaled a thin cloud of shimmering pollen against her wrist. The skin there warmed. Lyra sat back on her heels and felt something loosen in her chest that had been knotted since childhood. Then the drake stood. It tested the leg, folded its wings, and looked past her toward the trees. It made a low sound in its throat, not a call to her but a call meant to carry. Lyra turned. Beyond the porch, the grove had gone quiet in the wrong way — the quiet of many things listening. Something had sent the drake to her door, and something had followed it. She reached for her satchel and stood.
