Chapter 18
The forge foundation stood finished, four walls of flush brick. Lyra pressed her palm to a seam and felt the bricks shift. They sat clean, but nothing held them. One hard knock and the wall would fall. She needed mortar. Wet code, mixed thick, packed into every joint. She could not make it. Her hands broke things; they did not blend them.
Syntax worked near the pond, green code sliding across her arms. She was the one who could rewrite her own code while she still ran. Lyra had watched her patch a leak in her leg mid-step, closing the gap before it spread. That was the skill Lyra needed now.
"Syntax," Lyra said. "You rewrite yourself on the fly. You mix raw code without breaking it."
Syntax looked up. "I do."
Lyra held out the glowing shovel, its blade lit with blue circuit lines. "Take this to the shore. Dig sand and clay from the water's edge. Mix them into mortar. Bring it back."
Syntax took the shovel. She weighed it once. "How thick?"
"Thick enough to hold brick," Lyra said. "No gaps."
"Then it holds," Syntax said, and turned toward the pond.
Lyra followed. The pond glowed blue, its surface flickering with code that flowed like slow water. Syntax knelt at the rim. She drove the shovel into the bank and lifted a load of shimmering yellow sand, each grain flashing tiny symbols. She dumped it beside the water. Then she dug deeper for the clay, dark and heavy, and piled it next to the sand.
She crouched over both piles. Her hands sank in. Green code ran off her fingers into the mix. Lyra watched the strands of the sand change. Syntax was not just stirring. She was rewriting the grains, binding sand to clay the way she bound her own code, closing the seams between them.
"Water," Syntax said. She scooped a handful from the pond and worked it in. The mix darkened. It thickened. She pulled a fistful up and it clung together, wet and heavy, holding its shape.
Her arm flickered. A chunk of green code dropped off her wrist and did not return. She kept mixing. "Botched rewrite kills me," she said, flat. "This one won't." She folded the last of the sand in. The mortar came out smooth and dense.
They carried it back in a wide slab. Lyra packed it into the joints while Syntax smoothed each line. The mortar gripped. When Lyra pushed the wall, it did not shift. The bricks held as one.
The forge was whole. Sealed tight, ready for fire. The crew could melt ore now. They could pour eight blades.
Syntax wiped her hands. The gap in her wrist stayed dark. "It'll cure by the next cycle," she said. "Then you light it."
Lyra looked at the finished forge. One fire away from arming her crew. One fire from hunting the viruses down.
