Chapter 19

The forge stood sealed and whole, its brick walls holding tight. Lyra loaded the belly with code timber, glowing logs stacked tight against the anvil. Beside it waited the ore, ready to melt into blades. She struck a spark. The wood caught, but the flame ran weak and orange. She fed it more timber. The fire climbed, then died back. Ore needs white heat to run liquid. This fire could not reach it. The forge was built to arm eight programs, and it could not get hot. Lyra pressed her hand to the coals. Warm, not searing. The logs burned like ordinary wood. No draft drove them. No blast fed the flame. She stared at the cold ingots and felt the whole plan stall. One fire from hunting the viruses, and the fire would not rise. "You're doing it wrong," Drivers said. She stood at the forge mouth, red code running down her arms, watching the weak flame. "Fire alone won't melt that. You need a driver behind it." Lyra turned. "A driver." "Me." Drivers stepped closer. "I run systems. Every part of one leans on me. A forge is a system. Give me the flame and I'll drive it." Lyra had built the whole crew and never used what Drivers was for. She had watched her stand quiet through the mining and cutting. Now the one job left was the one only Drivers could do. "Then run it," Lyra said. Drivers knelt at the forge base. She pressed both palms flat to the brick. Red code poured out of her hands into the wall. She was not lighting the fire. She was operating it, feeding it commands, forcing air through the coals the way a bellows forces a lung. The flame bent. It stopped flickering. It stood straight and turned from orange to yellow. "More timber," Drivers said, flat. Lyra shoved logs in. Drivers drove harder. Her arms flickered with strain, the same way Protocol's had in the deep mine. The yellow flame went white. Heat rolled off the forge mouth and pushed Lyra back a step. The ore softened. Lyra watched an ingot slump at its edge, then run, molten and bright, into the mold below. One blade's worth poured clean. Then another. Drivers held the heat steady, her jaw tight, code streaming off her wrists. It was time to bring in the smith.
