Chapter 20

The molten ore ran clean into the molds. Drivers held the heat white while blade after blade poured and cooled on the anvil. Lyra lifted one raw blank. It was heavy and shapeless, an edge waiting to be born. She turned to the crew and knew the truth. Melting the ore was only half the work. Raw metal was not a weapon. Someone had to hammer it into shape, and no one here knew how. Lyra set the blank on the anvil and gripped the smithing hammer. She swung. The blow landed crooked. The metal folded wrong and split at the edge. She swung again. Worse. The blade cracked and dropped in two pieces. She had built this whole crew, mined the ore, lit the forge, and she could not close the last step herself. "Stop." Power Surge stood at the forge mouth. White code ran through her skin like cracks in glass. She had joined without pay, hunted by the same viruses that hunted Lyra, and she rarely spoke. She stepped past Lyra and looked at the broken blade. "You're fighting it. Metal isn't stone. You can't force it." "Then you do it," Lyra said. "I rewrite what a system trusts." Power Surge picked up a blank. "A blade is a system. Wrong shape, wrong trust. I can teach it to hold the shape I want." She said nothing more. Lyra handed her the hammer and the stack of blueprints. She had drawn each one herself, custom weapons for all eight of them. Power Surge spread the sheets on the brick and read them once. Then she set a blank on the anvil. She struck. The blow fell true. The metal bent where she wanted, not where it wished. She struck again, and the edge drew thin and straight. She was not beating the blade. She was rewriting it, telling the code what it now was. Sparks jumped. The shape came clean. "More," Drivers said, jaw tight, still driving the heat. Lyra fed the forge. Power Surge worked down the stack of blueprints, one blade at a time. A blade for piercing. A blade for cutting close. Each cooled true on the anvil in a growing line of eight. When the last blade cooled, Power Surge set down the hammer. "Done." She flexed her hands. "Handles next. But the edges will hold." Lyra lifted a finished blade. It was light and straight and sharp. For the first time the crew of eight had steel enough to arm every hand. The forge had done its work. Now they could fight the viruses head on instead of hiding. Then Drivers pulled her palms off the brick. The white heat died. The forge went dark and quiet. Drivers swayed and caught the anvil. Her red code had run pale, thin at the wrists. "I can't drive it again," she said. "Not soon." The blades were made. But the fire that made them was spent, and Drivers was nearly spent with it.
