Chapter 25

The crew stood armed at the cube's inner wall. Eight programs, eight weapons, and no door. Lyra ran her hand along the seam where the world sealed shut. It held them safe as dead storage data. It would also dump them straight onto open network the moment it cracked. Every scan out there would lock on before her first foot cleared the gap. She stopped and turned to the others. "How do we get out of here?" Aurelia lowered her yellow longbow and studied the wall. Her code ran quiet across her skin, reading the seam the way she read her own memory. "It's simple," she said. She looked at Lyra without softening it. "You beat the game. Find the boss who runs this world. Defeat him. When the game ends, the exit opens on its own. No scan waiting outside." Protocol pushed to the front. She could see every path on the network at once, and she read the seam like a packet log. "She's right," Protocol said. "This cube isn't just a hiding spot. It's a system with a core. The core is the boss." She dropped a dry note. "Beat the core and the walls stop being walls." Screenshot pressed both battle hammers to the stone. She read breaches like handwriting, and now she read the wall. "The cut runs down to a root here," she said flatly. "One clean line. Whoever built this signed it. Same careful hand that cut your memory, Lyra." Lyra's render bled color for a second. The same hand. The saboteur she was built to hunt had built her prison too. The boss of this world and her true enemy were one thing. "Then we don't just open a door," Lyra said. "We go through the boss." Power Surge stepped up with her war-hammer, the weapon forged to break foundational system code. She spoke plain. "I can find the core's trust. Rewrite what it lets in. But it fights back. Someone holds the line while I work." "I hold the line," Drivers said. She raised the red great-sword. Her arm still shook from powering the forge, but it held. "You break the floor. I keep them off you." Pixela Code spun her pink daggers once. "I scout the crack the second it opens. Fast. Before a scan gets a read." Lyra set her forked spear across her back and made the call. "We stop hiding and we start hunting. The boss is the one who erased me. We beat this game by killing him." She pressed her palm to Screenshot's marked line. "Cut here. Power Surge, when the root shows, take its trust." Screenshot swung. The hammer split the seam. Under the stone lay a pulsing knot of code, the world's core, exposed and humming. It was not a locked door anymore. It was a fight. The crew closed around the knot, weapons up, and the hunt for the boss began.
