Chapter 26

The core knot pulsed under the cracked wall. The crew pressed close, weapons ready, but nothing struck back. No boss rose from the code. Lyra had spent days in this world and never seen the thing that ran it. She lowered her spear. "It's not here," she said. "A boss doesn't hide in an open floor. It sits somewhere it built." She stepped away from the knot and knelt on the ground. The grass under her knees was woven from glowing symbols, each blade a line of running code. She pressed her fingers into the soil between the grass and the packed dirt below. The block hummed against her skin. She felt for a signal, a pull, anything the world leaned toward. "Power Surge, hold the core steady. Don't break it yet. I need to read where it points." Lyra closed her eyes and let her render soften. Her color bled at the edges, but she stayed with the strain. The world had a shape. She followed the hum through the dirt, past the pond, out to the far edge of the cube where a tall tree stood. Its branches dripped streams of light, code falling like rain from every limb. Beyond it the land climbed. She opened her eyes and scanned the tree line. There. Past the glowing tree, half swallowed by shadow, stood a castle. It sat far off and low, its walls the same dark tone as the dirt behind it. The grass code ran straight toward its gate, every line pointing home. Anyone else would have looked past it. Lyra rose and pointed. "That's his seat. The boss runs the world from there. Aurelia raised her longbow and sighted down the range. "It's a long way. Open ground the whole path." Protocol traced the route with her eyes and nodded. "One road in. He'll see us coming the moment we leave this floor." Lyra weighed it. The castle was the exit and the enemy both. To beat the game she had to reach the thing inside those walls. "Then we don't crawl," she said. "We march. Power Surge, ease off the core. We don't crack the wall here. We take the front door." Power Surge pulled her hammer back. The knot dimmed but held. Screenshot pressed a hammer to the ground and read the line beneath. "The cut runs to that castle," she said. "Same hand. He's waiting inside." Lyra shouldered her spear and faced the far gate. For days the boss had been a name with no shape. Now she had walls to break and a road to walk. "We found him," she said. "Move out. Aurelia takes the lead sight, Pixela scouts the road, Drivers holds the rear. We reach that castle and we end the game." The crew formed up and stepped off the floor toward the distant gate.
