Chapter 1

Madison Harper had eleven days to win the crown, and today her fans wanted lipgloss. The Midsummer Festival ended with one prize she cared about: the town of Peppergrove named a sweetheart of the year. Every summer a girl won it. This summer Madison meant to be that girl. She had a plan, and the plan started with her phone. She sat in her pink bedroom studio and switched on the ring light. The circle glowed warm on her face. She smiled into the camera and began the video her viewers loved most. "Good morning, Peppergrove," she said. "Let's get ready together." She moved fast. Foundation, blush, a flick of liner. Then she reached for the tube she swore by in every clip. She uncapped the vivid pink gloss and swiped it across her lips. "This is the one," she told the camera. "Never film without it." Her lips shone candy-bright under the light. Comments would flood in. They always did. Madison posted the video and set the phone down. Within an hour the numbers climbed higher than any clip she had made. Strangers shared it. People she didn't know tagged their friends. By lunch, a local account with thousands of followers reposted her face beside three words: "Peppergrove's next sweetheart?" She should have felt only joy. She felt it, and then she felt the drop in her stomach. Because the festival crown did not go to the girl with the most views. It went to the girl the town chose. The committee handed the sash to someone who volunteered, who baked for the church sale, who knew every shopkeeper by name. Madison's face lived on screens. Her name did not live in the town's mouth the same way. She filmed alone in a pink room. She barely stepped outside it. Her phone buzzed again. A comment sat at the top, pinned by the crowd. "Pretty girl, but who is she really? Never seen her at anything." Madison read it twice. The gloss still shone on her lips in the ring light. Her plan had worked too well. She was famous now, and famous was the wrong thing. Famous made people watch her from a distance. The crown needed people to know her up close. She stood and turned the light off. The room went dim and quiet. Eleven days, and the whole town was watching a girl they didn't actually know. Madison picked up her phone and opened the festival page. The volunteer sign-up list filled the screen. Bake sale. Booth setup. Parade committee. She had never touched any of it. Her thumb hovered over the first empty slot. She typed her name.
