Chapter 2

The volunteer coordinator gave Madison the messiest job on the list. The festival needed someone to run the makeup booth for the children's costume parade. Madison stood at the fairground tent the next morning and looked at what she had to work with. Ten days left, and finally a task she understood. Two stations sat under the tent. The first was a battered theater table, its wooden frame ringed with bright bulbs. Lipsticks and brushes spilled across it. Tissues overflowed the bins beside it. The second station looked like something dragged from a swamp scene. Moss hung over its mirror. Candles sat where lights should be. Vines wrapped the legs. A poster of makeup tips leaned against one leg, its lists of do's and don'ts curling at the edges. Madison expected to work alone. Instead a line of kids formed before she opened a single tube. A boy wanted to be a frog. A girl wanted green scales. Their mothers stood behind them, arms crossed, watching her. She picked up a brush and started. Green base on the frog boy's cheeks. She turned him to face the swamp mirror so he could see. He grinned at his reflection. His mother laughed. Madison felt the tent shift around her. Then she did the thing she loved most. She slowed down and taught. "Hold the brush like a pencil," she told the frog boy's mother. "Light strokes. You can always add more." The woman tried it on her son's chin. It worked. She looked at Madison like Madison had handed her a gift. Word moved down the line. Madison showed a girl how to blend two colors into one. She pointed at the tips poster and read a rule aloud. "Blot, don't smear," she said, and the kids repeated it. She handed a mother her own brush and guided her hand. The mother finished her daughter's face herself and beamed. By noon the tent was loud and full. Parents Madison had never met said her name. Not the online name. Her real one. "Madison showed me," a woman told a friend. "She's so patient with them." A man shook her hand and thanked her for making his shy son laugh. She worked until the last child left with painted cheeks. Her fingers were smeared with green and gold. Her signature pink gloss had worn off hours ago and she hadn't noticed. She had not once thought about the camera. The coordinator stopped by as Madison wiped down the theater table. "They loved you," the woman said. "Can you take the booth all week?" Madison said yes before the question finished. She had found it. Not fame. This. Real faces, real names, real hands learning from hers. Then the coordinator added one thing. "The booth's yours," she said. "But it's the same slot as the bake sale. And someone already signed up for that."
