Chapter 3

The next morning Madison returned to the tent early. The bake sale conflict still hung over her. If she took the booth all week, she pushed someone else out. She wanted the booth. She also wanted the town to like her, not resent her. So she came with a plan. She would prove the booth was worth keeping by making it the thing people talked about. She cleared the swamp station and set up a new look. She pulled out her boldest colors. She practiced a face she had never tried in public before. Dark plum eyes. Sharp liner. A deep red lip that looked almost like wine. She built it on a mannequin head first, then wiped it and taught the moves out loud to the small crowd forming again. "Watch the liner," she said. "One line, slow, don't lift the hand." A teenage girl leaned in close. A grandmother asked her to do it again slower. Madison did. She handed the brush to a mother and guided her fingers. The mother drew the wing herself and gasped at the mirror. Then a woman stepped under the tent who did not belong to the morning crowd. She wore a long black dress with a slit up the leg. Her dark hair fell in heavy waves. She held a martini glass, the drink inside red as the lip Madison had just taught. Every head turned. The chatter dropped. "You did this?" the woman asked. She nodded at the plum-and-wine face on the mannequin. Her voice was cool and amused. "I teach it," Madison said. "Anyone can do it. Even you." A few parents laughed. The woman set her glass down and sat in the chair. "Then teach me," she said. "In front of them." Madison's hands went still for a second. This was a test, and the whole tent was watching. She picked up the liner and started. She talked as she worked. Slow line. Blot, don't smear. She had the woman hold the brush and finish her own second eye. The woman leaned to the mirror and studied the sharp wing she had drawn herself. "I run the harvest dinner every year," the woman said, loud enough for all to hear. "Half the town shows up. I want you there, doing exactly this." She stood and lifted her glass toward Madison. "You're wasted on kids' face paint." The tent buzzed. Parents pulled out phones, not to film Madison, but to save the dinner date. Madison had won something real. A public invitation, in front of the very people whose votes she needed. But the harvest dinner was that same festival week. It landed on the exact night she had promised the coordinator she would run the booth. She had traded one clash for a bigger one. Now she had to choose which room full of voters to stand up.
