Chapter 5

The decoy had worked, but the crowd had grown. Three carts now waited where the trading post held space for one. Mara stood on the ridge above the post and counted the newcomers. Twelve traders. They stood in the open grass between the cliffs, stamping against the cold, breath rising like smoke. A guild scout on the hills would spot them in a heartbeat. Her post was too small. Her people were exposed. "We can't stack them like firewood," Marigold said. She climbed the slope, red curls whipping loose, a coil of rope over one shoulder. Marigold had lost her village's guild funding for opening her door to strangers. She had never once looked back at the cost. "They keep coming. That's good. But they're standing in a field where anyone can see." Mara looked at the valley below. A thin river cut through rolling hills. Rugged cliffs walled the far side. She had built the post small on purpose, hidden behind stone. But the traders arrived faster than the space could swallow them. "We don't make the post bigger," Mara said. "We spread them out. We build a second way in. One they can wait along, out of sight, until we call them down." Marigold frowned. "They won't understand each other. Half of them speak tongues I've never heard." Mara remembered an old paved path buried under moss, past the far cliffs. Traders had used it once. Its worn stones carried enchantments that turned strange speech into plain words. "There's the sunken road," she said. "The one that makes any language clear. We route the newcomers there. They wait between the walls. They can talk, trade, keep warm. No open field." They worked past dark. Marigold cleared the moss and set a wisp-fairy circling the hills above the road. The creature drifted invisible, a faint shimmer only Mara could catch, watching for scouts. Mara moved the waiting traders one cart at a time down into the sunken path. Between the stone walls, they could not be seen from the hills. She marked the entrance with a carved trail stone, its grooves cut to look like natural weathering. Only her people knew to follow it. A huge cat padded out from behind Marigold's cart, fur thick as a bear's, and settled across the road entrance. Traders stepped around it. "That thing frightens the scouts more than my rig does," Marigold said. Mara let it stay. By midnight the field stood empty. Twelve traders waited safe below the cliffs, speaking freely in the road that made their words match. Two more carts rolled in and vanished into the same hidden stretch. Mara climbed back to the ridge. The open ground was clear. But she had doubled her network's size in one night. More paths meant more mouths who knew a piece of the secret. The road held everyone now. And any one of them could carry its shape straight to the guild.
