Chapter 6
By dawn the sunken road held twenty traders, safe and out of sight. But the next problem walked in on its own legs. Mara climbed to the ridge and saw two strangers on the cliffs above the valley. They carried packs and staffs. They wandered back and forth, lost, searching for a way down. Their carved trail stone sat plain at their feet, ignored. They did not know how to read it. And any scout on the far hills would see them the moment the light spread.
"They can't find the door," Mara said. "They know we exist. They don't know how to reach us. So they walk the open cliffs until someone shoots them."
Marigold reached the ridge behind her, breathing hard, a bright ornament under her arm. She had lost her village's guild funding for welcoming strangers like these. She had never once bargained that choice back. "A door that only your own people can find is no door," she said. "It's a trap for everyone else."
Mara turned the trail stone over in her mind. It only worked for people already told the secret. New arrivals had no one to tell them. "We need a signal," Mara said. "Something a trader recognizes, but a scout dismisses."
Marigold set her ornament upright at the cliff edge. It was a tall Celtic charm ringed with worked marigold flowers, glowing faint gold. "This draws the eye," she said. "I use its scent to call travelers to my door at home. Every free trader knows the marigold mark. The guild thinks it's a village trinket."
Mara studied the far slope. A lure alone would pull traders straight into the open, worse than before. She needed the lure to point them somewhere hidden. "Not at the cliff top," she said. "Down there. At the mouth of the road, behind the wall. They see it, they climb down toward it, and the cliffs swallow them before a scout can react."
They moved fast. Marigold carried the charm down and wedged it in the rock beside the entrance. It glowed low, its scent drifting up the slope. Mara set a second, smaller marker halfway up as a guide. Then she waited.
The two lost strangers stopped. One caught the scent. He pointed. They followed the glow down the broken path, off the exposed cliff, into the sunken road. The huge cat lifted its head as they passed, then settled again. Within minutes the cliff top stood empty.
By noon, four more arrivals found the charm without help. Each one climbed down the same hidden path and vanished behind the walls. No wandering. No open searching. The lure worked.
Mara watched from the ridge, satisfied and uneasy. The door announced itself now. That was the point. But a mark bright enough to guide a stranger could guide a guild scout just as well. Sooner or later, someone would follow the marigold glow who did not belong.
